The people of Kansas City are grieving the senseless loss of firefighter-paramedic Graham Hoffman, 29, who was stabbed to death by a patient he was transporting inside an ambulance on the morning of Sunday, April 27, 2025. Hoffman’s on-duty death while assisting someone in need sent shockwaves of sadness and outrage throughout the city and renewed urgent discussions regarding the protection of first responders.
April 27’s early morning hours started much like any for the Kansas City’s rescue crew. Police officers were sent at approximately 12:30 a.m. following reports of a woman walking on the shoulder of Missouri 152 Highway just east of North Oak Trafficway. Officers were worried about the woman’s wellbeing and discovered 38-year-old Shanetta Bossell was bleeding from a cut on a finger.
Paramedics, including Graham Hoffman, arrived to assess her condition. Although Bossell initially declined assistance, she eventually agreed to be transported to Saint Luke’s Hospital. As a precaution, police followed the ambulance.
But within minutes of the transport, a tragedy unfolded. At about 1:25 a.m., Bossell reportedly produced a knife and stabbed Hoffman in the chest, piercing his heart. Hoffman’s partner, responding police, and emergency responders at North Kansas City Hospital tried desperately to save him, but the young paramedic died a few hours later.
During the ensuing chaos after the stabbing attempt, Bossell allegedly attempted to escape, grappling with a police officer and even biting him before being restrained. An ambulance was later searched and a knife was discovered there.
Those who knew Graham Hoffman said that he was more than a first responder — he was a symbol of compassion and service. Since 2022, a member of the Kansas City Fire Department, Hoffman was characterized as being kind, skilled, and consistently committed.
“He was caring, loving and a compassionate individual and a true leader on and away from the job,”
said Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson, his words choked with emotion.
Before joining the Kansas City Fire Department, Hoffman began his career at the Belton Fire Department, where he was among the most calm and empathetic of the team. He was working overtime on the day of his death — a testament to his commitment.
Hoffman’s death marks a devastating loss not only for his family and friends but for an entire city that relied on his selflessness.
The suspect, Shanetta Bossell, has a troubling history. Just four days before the fatal stabbing, Bossell was arrested for allegedly assaulting an off-duty Platte City police officer. During that incident, she reportedly bit the officer and tried to grab a knife from his vest. Despite concerns raised about her being a “danger to the public,” she was released after posting a $10,000 bond.
Now, Bossell stands on much more severe charges: first-degree murder, armed criminal activity, third-degree assault, and resisting arrest. She is held on a $1 million bond and may be sent away for the rest of her life should she be convicted.
The authorities have not speculated on any motive behind the attack and the matter remains under investigation.
The citizens of Kansas City came together after Hoffman’s death with a show of grief, solidarity, and calls for justice. The mayor of the city called the tragedy a
“gut-wrenching reminder of the hazards our first responders face on a daily basis,”
and promised to work on bringing about more protections for the responders.
Graham Hoffman represented the Kansas City spirit — big-hearted, brave, and dedicated,”
Lucas said.
“We owe him, his family, and colleagues our best.”
A respectful procession took Hoffman’s body from the North Kansas City Hospital to the medical examiner’s office as police and fire fighters as well as ordinary citizens occupied the streets along the route offering respects. Funeral details are expected to follow as condolences streamed in from the regional and national community.
