Jamaican singer-songwriter D.bé Jayri unveils a new hit single that showcases his artistic abilities to mix wonderful melodies into well-organized instrumentation, which comes in the form of “Butterfly (Mariah Carey Cover).”
D.bé Jayri had a chat with us and answered our unique 4 Questions. Check it out below.
HYPEFRESH: To begin, let’s introduce ourselves. Feel free to share as much or as little as you’re comfortable with about your name, age, and where you’re from.
D.bé Jayri : My name is D.bé Jayri (my legal and songwriter’s name is Dadrien Brown). I am 35 years old, and I was born and raised in Jamaica but have resided in Toronto, Canada, for 13 years.
HYPEFRESH: Can you tell us about your new single, “Butterfly” (Mariah Carey Cover)?
D.bé Jayri : My new single, “Butterfly,” is a rendition of the original version that was written and performed by Mariah Carey and Walter Afansieff. I was around ten when Mariah Carey first released Butterfly in 1997.
I immediately fell in love with the song, and it has become one of the songs that inspired me musically and personally. I remembered watching the music video to the song in that same year and was mesmerized by how Mariah Carey demonstrated what freedom and free-spiritedness looked like.
For me, Mariah and the running horses in the video became iconic and the most memorable scenes. Since then, Butterfly has always been in my music library, inspiring and motivating me in some of the most challenging times in my life.
Spring of 2022, I planned on how to put the cover together. I have always wanted to do a rendition of the song, but I was surprised to learn how I would take on such a feat this year, 2022. First, consult a producer called Chiosa Fred from Nigeria through Fiverr (a hub for freelancers in the arts and entertainment).
I sent him the original track of Mariah’s and asked him to recreate the instrumental with the idea I presented: I asked him to draw inspiration from the electric guitar strings in Richard Marx’s “Hold On To the Night” song. Fred pulled it off and produced this fantastic recreation of the instrumental.
On the same Fiverr, I hired a group based in the United States to recreate the choir section of the track, which included a very talented female singer named Sade. She is from Antigua and Barbuda and did the female solo/adlibs near the end of the track.
My studio engineer, K.R. Moore from Toronto, Canada, encouraged me to let Sade do the adlibbing near the song’s end, which turned out to be unique.
My solo parts came from the heart and years of inspiration from Carey’s song version. K.R. Moore studio engineered the whole track and made it into the masterpiece it is. I then purchased the appropriate copyright licensing to use the song.
I am amazed and so grateful to everyone who participated in this recreation of a great song and big hit from Mariah Carey. This rendition is epic, inspirational, and marketable in today’s music industry.
HYPEFRESH: What do you like most about being a music artist?
D.bé Jayri : What I like most about being a musician is the ability to draw inspiration from music, and life in general, to create beautiful music for people to love and enjoy.
