Investigators believe a single oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl may have caused the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, according to multiple law enforcement sources who spoke to TMZ.
The sources said Panettiere, 36, obtained black-market prescription drugs, including oxycodone, from a longtime dealer in Los Angeles. She met with the dealer before flying to South Carolina and carried several of the pills with her. Authorities are working to trace the suspected fatal pill back to that supplier.
Panettiere died on Aug. 16, 2026, at an apartment in the Judson Mill Lofts complex at 701 Easley Bridge Road in Greenville, South Carolina. Emergency responders found her in cardiac arrest that afternoon. She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 2:32 p.m. after advanced life-support efforts failed.
Her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach Hickerson were present. Zach Hickerson later told TMZ that the pair found Panettiere unconscious, that he called 911, and that Brian administered Narcan, an opioid overdose antidote. The brothers then performed CPR until fire and EMS crews arrived. The Narcan did not reverse the effects.
Toxicology results remain pending and could take up to 12 weeks, Greenville County Coroner’s Office officials have said. No official cause of death has been released. An autopsy found no signs of trauma. Preliminary police findings indicated no foul play or suspicious circumstances.
The Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the investigation by the Greenville Police Department. Agents in Los Angeles and South Carolina are examining the source of any controlled substances involved. Hickerson has met with DEA officials as part of the probe.
Hayden Lesley Panettiere was born Aug. 21, 1989, in Palisades, New York. She rose to fame as a child actor and later starred as Claire Bennet in the NBC series Heroes and as Juliette Barnes in Nashville. She also appeared in films including Remember the Titans and the Scream franchise.
In May 2026 she released the memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she detailed long struggles with substance abuse, postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya with boxer Wladimir Klitschko, and a turbulent relationship with Hickerson that included multiple domestic violence arrests. Hickerson, a South Carolina native who has worked in real estate and held a minor acting credit, pleaded no contest to felony charges related to assaults on Panettiere and served jail time.
Law enforcement sources described the fentanyl-laced oxycodone theory as the current working hypothesis while toxicology testing continues. Officials have not publicly identified the alleged dealer or filed charges related to the supply of any substances.
