Inside the Secret Dealings of Clarence Thomas

The Supreme Court’s conservative justice, Clarence Thomas, broke a long-standing norm for judges when he accepted ultra luxury trips from a GOP donor who also gave him millions of dollars. Several current and retired federal judges and ethics experts have said the travel was a violation of their code of conduct, which prohibits taking gifts from people in power.

Mr Crow, who is a businessman and real estate investor, has given the justice and his wife, Ginni, trips to Topridge, his private lakeside resort in the Adirondack Mountains, and he has a large yacht where the Thomases spend several weeks each year. According to flight records and interviews with Crow’s employees, ProPublica reports, the trips have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In 2019, shortly after Thomas delivered his final opinion of the term, he boarded Crow’s jet to Indonesia, where they spent nine days on his yacht. The trip could have cost up to $500,000, the report says.

According to ethics lawyers, he didn’t report the trips on his annual financial disclosures, which would have been a violation of federal law.

Thomas’s political views differ dramatically from those of his colleagues on the Supreme Court. Still, they are consistent with a conservative jurisprudence that has made him one of the most reliable members of the court-appointed by Republican presidents.

But he has drawn a harsh line between his partisan views and his constitutional responsibilities. He has voted against several cases that he believes threaten to undermine the establishment clause, which guarantees the separation of church and state. He has also ruled against the president on controversial issues, including abortion and gay marriage.
