Sampling old and timeless songs has become a growing trend among rappers. Some have even misused lines and verses without doing their research. For instance, A$AP Rocky recently joked about an instance where Jay-Z called him out for bringup up the controversy surrounding the French champagne brand Cristal and Hov’s wine, Ace of Spades. Perhaps A$AP Rocky should’ve read up on the disturbing history surrounding Cristal before putting it in a verse.
A$AP Rocky Didn’t Know Hov Owned Aces Of Spades

During an interview with Drink Champs, A$AP Rocky jokingly described an instance where Hov confronted him over his verse about the French champagne brand Cristal mentioned in his “Goldie” track. “Cristal by the case, maybe that was racist, I would prefer the Aces, ain’t no different when you taste it,” Rocky rapped in the 2012 track. Furthermore, the rapper claimed he didn’t know Hov owned the champagne brand Aces of Spades. Yet, his lyrics suggest that he knew of the controversy and boycott that surrounded Cristal.
Hov Tells Him That Cristal Promotes Racism
Though, early in his career, Rocky appeared oblivious to the whole controversy surrounding Cristal. In fact, one of his earlier tracks featured a verse in which Rocky said that “Cristal rocked and disliked Hov’s Ace of Spades altogether.” However, Hov didn’t approve of the verse and let one of Rocky’s impersonators know that he disapproved of the lyric. On Drink Champs, Rocky revealed that Hov told one of his “lil A$AP Rocky fans” that “Cristal was racist.” If Rocky really didn’t know the history behind the French Brand champagne, he certainly does now.
