FSU’s Ethan Pritchard Awakens, Moves to Rehab After Shooting

Ethan Pritchard is an 18-year-old freshman linebacker from Sanford, Florida, playing for Florida State University. He made remarkable recovery from gunshot wound to the posterior head suffered by him on August 31, 2025. He was discharged from intensive care unit only after having been there for close to a month’s period and was discharged from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital on October 9. He was then transferred to Brooks Rehabilitation, Jacksonville, where he is currently alert, busy, and on rehab for the traumatic head injury.

Pritchard, who was signed by the Seminoles this July out of Seminole High School, was driving with his aunt and 3-year-old cousin home from an aunt’s holiday party around Havana Heights Apartments in Havana, Florida, some 16 miles from the FSU campus when shots struck the car in what is believed to have been an incident of mistaken identity. He was operated on emergently and initially put into a medically induced coma to manage brain swelling, but benchmarks ensued: breathing on his own, talking, even watching the FSU-Miami game bedside with dad.

The ordeal has tried Pritchard’s family greatly. His father, Earl Pritchard, spoke extensive gratitude:

“We are extremely thankful to the medical personnel, FSU coaching personnel, and the community for their continued support during this recovery process.”

Earl noted the continued difficulties but reiterated his son’s resolve, concluding,

“Ethan has a long road to recovery facing him, but I know he will keep battling and he will do so with the complete support from our FSU families and our Seminole County families together.”

FSU’s reaction has been resolute. Steady supporter head coach Mike Norvell said this of the hospital send-off:

“This is an amazing benchmark for Ethan’s recovery. Our players are dedicated to helping him each step of the way.”

Players converged to give Pritchard a send-off, action caught on social media that highlighted program cohesion. Community support also comes from the form of a GoFundMe that topped $140,000 to pay for medical and associated expenses.

He was well-known for leadership skills as well as athletic ability. Pritchard was predicted to strengthen FSU’s defense. His dad remarked on the motivation from the general support.

The Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement made the arrests of the four suspects Jayden Bodison, Caron Miller, Germany Atkins, and an unidentified minor charged with crimes such as attempted murder and shooting into an occupied auto. Official said:

“This appears to be a case of mistaken identity, based on our investigation.”

The arrests stemmed from tips and warrants, with suspects initially held without bond.

This case highlights the gun violence issues among Florida’s. The state registered high gun injuries in 2024, with national rates reporting over 31,000 nonfatal shootings where victims among youth made up an appreciable percentage, up during the general concerns. The recent increase in crimes in Havana has intensified calls for improved security.

Covering college sports, such occurrences bring out student-athlete risk factors, giving impetus to the much-needed campus-adjacent safety talk. The FDLE’s response, as reported in outlets like ESPN’s coverage, emphasizes accountability, yet prevention demands policy attention.

At Brooks Rehabilitation, neurorehab specialist Pritchard’s keen awareness stirs the optimistics, despite the different outcomes. As Earl put it,

“This is only the start of the battle, but with this support, we’re good to go.”

Pritchard’s resolve sees the emphasis on community cohesion during gun violence. The Seminoles and their fans stand strong.
