Kadarius Toney, a former wide receiver of Kansas City Chiefs, was arrested on Feb. 6, 2025, in Douglasville, Georgia. The 26-year-old is accused of felony charges of obstructing or harassing a 911 call and of aggravated assault by strangulation.
This arrest is a product of a struggle that happened on January 14, 2025, during which Toney is accused of having his arms around a woman’s throat, restricting her breathing. The woman is reported to have red spots around her throat and hemorrhaged in her eyes. Toney is also accused of seizing the phone of the woman to prevent her from making a call to emergency services.
Following the incident, he was given a warrant of arrest on January 15. Toney was arrested on February 6 and released one day after he posted a $50,000 bond, $25,000 per count. So far, everything is going in a legal process, and Toney has yet to be publicly brought to trial on the charges. Toney’s professional career in football has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Drafted in the first round of the Draft in 2021 by the New York Giants, he was then traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022.
Toney was a member of Super Bowl LVII when he set a game-winning 65-yard punt return record for the Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, his Kansas City stint was also plagued by injuries and subpar play, leading to his release in August of 2024. He signed for a short time with the Cleveland Browns in September of 2024 but was released in December of that year after in-game issues, such as a botched punt and a taunting penalty in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This latest arrest is not Toney’s first brush with controversy. In 2018, while a University of Florida student, he was involved in a traffic stop in which a rifle was discovered in his car; he was released without being charged. He also was in line for university discipline for his role in a campus fight over an airsoft gun that someone confused with an assault rifle.
As of yet, there has been no official response to Toney’s arrest neither from the NFL nor any team. Experts in law believe that, in case Toney is found to be culpable, he would be likely to face serious repercussions in terms of the law, something that would also affect his career in professional football.
