In the pre-dawn moments of August 4, 2025, the small town of Middleburg, Florida, was awoken with an indescribable tragedy. Officials report 14-year-old Trevor Lee murdered his parents David Lee, 44, and Brandi Smith, 45 while they slept in their family home situated in the Silver Oak subdivision.
After the shooting, Trevor reportedly walked over a mile to CrossPointe Church in Fleming Island, called 911, confessed to the killings, and waited for deputies to arrive. On the 911 call, released in a redacted format by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Trevor can be heard asking,
“I was gonna ask if you could pray for me, ma’am.”
The dispatcher responded gently:
“I’ll definitely be praying for you, son.”
The deadly gunshots occurred at an undetermined hour after midnight. It was confirmed by Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook that both victims were found in their bed, with multiple gun-shot wounds for each. A gun which could be owned by a parent was discovered at the crime scene. No one else was at the home at the time.
After the incident, Trevor first called his aunt in California, who in turn contacted 911. Trevor proceeded on foot to an adjacent church parking lot. In the 911 call, censored for privacy reasons, Trevor informs the dispatcher he had cleared out his pockets and shed his backpack. Deputies showed up around 10 minutes later and arrested him without any problems.
Trevor Lee is currently facing two charges of second-degree murder. Though Florida laws allow for juveniles to be tried for violent crimes as adults, the office of the State Attorney has yet to decide whether Trevor will be charged with a crime committed as an adult.
Police speculate the shooting resulted from a domestic dispute. Although details surrounding the dispute remain unavailable, prior Facebook posts indicate earlier issues within the family. In 2019 on Facebook, Brandi Smith posted,
“This lil boy gives me pure hell. Y’all keep us lifted up in prayer.”
Sheriff Cook noted the case is still under investigation, including a review of Trevor’s mental health, school record, and the history of the family. Records show at least five calls for service at the family’s home at a minimum but no details were released about the incidents that happened.
Friends and neighbors are struggling to understand what happened to a couple they describe as loving, hardworking, and generous. One family friend shared,
“They treated me like a son. This just doesn’t make sense.”
David Lee Smith and Brandi Smith were active contributors to their community, and Trevor himself just finished junior high school, gearing up for high school the following week. This violent and untimely death of the both parents has shocked neighbors and family members.

While Middleburg grieves, the senseless killing case raises deeper questions about violence against young people, gun availability within homes, and the climbing mental illness rate for adolescents.
Authorities were swift in emphasising the fact that this appears to be a unique domestic issue with absolutely no danger at all to the public at large. But questions remain: How does a 14-year-old find himself with a gun and what leads to such irretrievable choices?
Clay County Sheriff’s Office is still treating the case with delicacy, cautioning the public against speculations. Meanwhile, church community, schoolmates, and neighbors are still suffering from shock, trauma, and incredulity.
The haunting image of a teenager, alone in a church, quietly asking a 911 dispatcher for prayer after allegedly killing his own parents, underscores the devastating weight of this case.
With the criminal trial impending, and with mental health professionals set to explore Trevor’s history, this tragedy is now prompting uncomfortable but needed discussions about the protection of our loved ones, caring for our at-risk youths, and facing the realities of violence at home.
