Florida Powerball Champ Arrested 1 Day After $167M Win for Kicking Deputy

The glow of the TradeWinds Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida, was interrupted by a scene that has since captured national attention. Just three days earlier, James S. Farthing, 50, of Georgetown, Kentucky, had been smiling for cameras at Kentucky Lottery headquarters, holding an oversized check for $167.3 million the largest Powerball jackpot in the state’s history. Now, he was on the ground, handcuffed, after deputies said he kicked a Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy in the head during a disturbance.

In an arrest affidavit that was retrieved from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), deputies attended a late evening fight within the resort. Witnesses said Farthing struck another guest before Deputy Nicholas Areostatico attempted to intervene. Body-worn camera footage released by PCSO shows the moment Areostatico exclaimed,

“I just got kicked,”

as resort security urged Farthing to comply.

Deputies reported that Farthing tried to flee, prompting the use of a Taser. The video shows him being tackled to the ground. At one point, Farthing can be heard apologizing, but the deputy replied,

“Save your apologies for later.”

The affidavit states Areostatico suffered swelling and redness under his right eye.

Farthing was jailed in Pinellas County on charges of felony battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, simple battery, and a parole violation out of Kentucky. His bond was set at $11,500, but he remained in custody as of early May because of an outstanding felony warrant in Kentucky related to his parole status.

His girlfriend, Jacqueline Fightmaster, 42, was also arrested for disorderly intoxication stemming from the same incident. She was released the following day.

Farthing’s Powerball win came on April 26, 2025, with a ticket purchased in Georgetown, Kentucky. He claimed the prize on April 28 alongside his mother, calling it an early Mother’s Day gift. According to the Kentucky Lottery, he had not yet decided whether to take the 30-year annuity or the $77.3 million lump sum option.

Court records reviewed by The Smoking Gun show Farthing’s criminal history spans nine Kentucky counties, with prior convictions for assault, bribery, and drug offenses. In one case, he was convicted of choking a former girlfriend; in another, of offering bribes to corrections officers while incarcerated. At the time of his Florida arrest, he was on active parole, set to run through August 2025.

The arrest video spread quickly on social media platforms such as X and TikTok, reinforcing a familiar narrative: the lottery winner who falls into legal trouble. While many posts focused on the irony of Farthing’s sudden reversal of fortune, law enforcement transparency advocates pointed to PCSO’s decision to release the full bodycam footage as a case study in timely public disclosure.

Experts note that sudden wealth does not erase past legal obligations or guarantee personal stability.

“This is a reminder,”

“that a lottery win changes your bank account, not necessarily your behavior or your criminal record.”
