Fans Voice Concern as Yella Beezy Hires Lawyer from Failed Karmelo Anthony Case

Social media lit up this week after viral posts claimed Dallas rapper Yella Beezy brought in attorney Mike Howard the same lawyer who represented teen Karmelo Anthony in his high-profile 2026 murder trial that ended in a swift conviction and 35-year sentence. Clips and screenshots spread fast across X, Instagram, and YouTube comment sections, with fans posting things like

“Not Mike Howard too… Beezy in trouble” and “After that Anthony case? This don’t look good.”

The central question buzzing online: Is this a real legal shake-up for Beezy, or did social media mash up two separate Dallas cases?

The Mike Howard claim is false. Court records and local reporting show Howard is not on Yella Beezy’s defense team. Famous for his rhymes, the artist born as Markies Deandre Conway works with seasoned Dallas lawyer Toby Shook alongside legal expert John Gussio III.

Beezy was indicted in March 2025 on a capital murder-for-remuneration charge tied to the November 11, 2020, killing of fellow Dallas rapper MO3 (Melvin Noble). Prosecutors allege he arranged a murder-for-hire plot involving alleged gunman Kewon Dontrell White amid a long-running beef. Beezy has pleaded not guilty and remains presumed innocent as the case heads toward trial.

He’s currently out on a reduced $750,000 bond with GPS monitoring, travel restrictions, and limited approval to leave home for recording sessions. Pretrial motions continue, largely over the massive volume of evidence prosecutors turned over.

For context, Toby Shook previously represented Karmelo Anthony alongside Mike Howard in Anthony’s 2026 trial over the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet. Anthony was convicted and sentenced to 35 years, prompting some fans to draw connections and question how Shook’s involvement might play out for Beezy.

“Fans are worried because Anthony’s self-defense didn’t work, and Beezy’s facing capital murder charges that could mean life without parole,”

One widely shared post noted.

Shook brings serious credentials: over 40 years in practice, former Chief of the Felony Trial Division in the Dallas County DA’s office, and experience in major cases like the Texas Seven prison escapees and the Kaufman prosecutor murders. Still, the recent high-profile loss has some in the hip-hop community second-guessing the strategy for a premeditated murder-for-hire case that’s tougher to defend than a spontaneous altercation.

At the end of the day, legal outcomes turn on facts presented in court not viral narratives or guilt by attorney association. Beezy’s case is still unfolding, and he maintains his innocence. We’ll keep watching as trial developments continue in Dallas.
