According to federal authorities, Anna Kepner, age 18, was sexually abused and murdered by her stepbrother, aged 16 years, onboard a Carnival cruise ship in November last year. U.S. Department of Justice disclosed the charge against the adult on April 13, 2026. This is a national case that occurred in international waters.
The body of Anna Kepner was discovered hidden under a bed in the room that she shared with her stepbrother and a younger brother. She was wrapped in a blanket and also covered with life jackets. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner concluded that she died due to homicide through mechanical asphyxia. In court documents, it is stated that she was sexually assaulted by her stepbrother before murder.
Anna Kepner, aged 18 years, was a high school senior in grade twelve at Temple Christian School located in Titusville, Florida. Family members and the school authorities describe her as a bright and happy girl who would always get top marks, that is, “straight A’s” in all subjects. In addition, she was involved in various sports such as cheerleading. The murderer of Anna Kepner is her step-brother, aged 16 years.

The family boarded the Carnival Horizon in Miami on November 2, 2025, for a six-night Western Caribbean cruise. On November 6, Anna had dinner with the family but left early, saying her braces were bothering her. That night she visited her grandmother at the casino, told relatives “I love you guys,” and was last seen alive “dressed up.” The alleged assault and killing occurred overnight in international waters as the ship headed back toward Miami. On November 7 around 11:17 a.m., a housekeeper discovered her body.

T.H. was first charged as a juvenile in February 2026. On April 13, the child was charged in a federal grand jury indictment in Southern District of Florida with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. He entered a plea of not guilty and is under electronic monitoring at his residence with his family until the trial.

One side showed a static family photo of Anna holding school certificates next to the blurred face of the young man identified as her stepbrother. The format, common in true-crime coverage, quickly racked up views but also drew criticism for blurring the suspect’s face while using Anna’s personal clips.

The federal jurisdiction includes certain ships when they are considered American soil due to being registered in the country or destined for its shores, making the prosecution of the criminals possible by the FBI and Southern District of Florida.
