Former NFL star Dez Bryant opened up on X about a past financial dispute with rapper Offset on Tuesday, April 7 — one day after the former Migos member was shot outside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
In a lengthy post that rapidly gained millions of views, Bryant recounted defeating Offset (real name Kiari Kendrell Cephus) in a high-stakes gambling game for $8,000. When Bryant tried to collect, he claimed Offset pretended to be asleep to avoid paying. Bryant said he tapped him awake and reminded him of the debt, at which point Offset’s crew appeared ready to turn the situation physical. Outnumbered and by himself, Bryant chose to back down. “I chilled because I was by myself completely outnumbered… so I charged it to the game,” he wrote, using slang to describe writing off the loss as part of the risks of gambling.
Bryant made clear he held no grudge over the amount, noting it was minor compared to what he could earn quickly. “Most importantly I’m not getting mad over nothing I can make within 5 minutes,” he added, before offering advice to younger followers: “Some of us carry a lot of sense… kids don’t ever listen to a fool like this.”
The story drew intense attention due to its timing. Bryant revealed that Offset had reached out to him about another “money play” roughly three hours before the shooting on April 6. Bryant declined because of the previous unpaid debt. “I swear to God Offset reached out to me yesterday three hours before he got shot on a money play… I thought about it and said..I’m good.. then I saw the news later on and was like damn…some people don’t play about they money,” he posted.
The incident unfolded shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, April 6, in the valet area of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. A fight broke out and escalated into gunfire, with Offset sustaining a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood and listed in stable condition, according to his representatives.
Rapper Lil Tjay (real name Tione Jayden Merritt) was arrested in connection with the altercation and charged with disorderly conduct (affray), a misdemeanor. He was also cited for operating a vehicle without a valid license, booked into Broward County Jail, and released Tuesday afternoon after posting bond. Lil Tjay’s attorney, Dawn M. Florio, stated that her client was not in possession of a firearm and faced no gun-related charges, pushing back against rumors that he was the shooter.
Resurfaced direct messages between Offset and Lil Tjay, which Bryant included in his post, highlighted prior tensions over an alleged $10,000 gambling debt. In the messages, Lil Tjay pressed for repayment, and Offset reportedly responded aggressively. Lil Tjay later told reporters he had no involvement in any fight or shooting and denied the rumors.
Police detained a second individual at the scene, though that person was not charged. As of April 8, the shooter has not been publicly identified, and the investigation remains active.
Bryant prefaced his post by saying he rarely speaks about personal relationships but felt compelled to share given the circumstances. His account has intensified online discussion about Offset’s reported gambling issues, with additional names like 42 Dugg mentioned in past social media chatter.
New York radio personality Ebro Darden added another layer while reacting to the news on his show, revealing that Offset still owes him $5,000 from a Super Bowl bet placed in New Orleans. Ebro said he was willing to pay if he had lost but noted he has not aggressively pursued the debt.
The event has prompted comparisons to the 2022 fatal shooting of Offset’s Migos bandmate Takeoff, who was killed as an innocent bystander at a Houston bowling alley.
As of Wednesday morning, neither Offset nor his team has publicly responded to Bryant’s claims. The situation once again highlights the sometimes volatile mix of celebrity, gambling, and unresolved debts in hip-hop circles.
