Devon Aoki’s Husband Accused in Scooter Hit-and-Run Incident

James Hunter Bailey, the husband of actress and model Devon Aoki, has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left a scooter rider seriously injured in Coral Gables, Fla., earlier this week. The case has since expanded to include a civil lawsuit naming both Bailey and Aoki as defendants.

According to Coral Gables police, the incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 15 at the intersection of Giralda Avenue and Douglas Road. Authorities allege that Bailey, 40, was driving a white Audi SQ7 SUV when he struck Jonathan King, a California resident visiting Miami, who was riding a rented electric scooter in a marked crosswalk.

Bystander video, which has circulated widely online, appears to show King’s foot trapped under the front tire of the SUV as he and his girlfriend plead with the driver to reverse. Police reports state that after briefly backing up, Bailey allegedly drove forward again and fled the scene without providing aid or identifying himself.

King sustained multiple serious injuries, including fractures to both feet, a broken leg requiring reconstructive surgery, and significant soft-tissue damage. He was transported to Coral Gables Hospital for treatment.

Investigators traced the SUV using license plate readers and surveillance footage to a Pinecrest home owned by Bailey and Aoki, best known for her role as Suki in 2 Fast 2 Furious. Police said Bailey initially barricaded himself inside the residence for several minutes after arriving there, before surrendering without incident. The vehicle reportedly showed damage consistent with the collision.

Bailey was arrested and booked into Miami-Dade County’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and a misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer without violence. He appeared in bond court on Dec. 16, where a judge set bail at $7,500. He was released later that day. Police said there were no signs of alcohol or drug impairment noted in the report.

Bailey’s attorney, Michelle Suskauer, said in a statement that the defense is “gathering information about this accident as it involved someone operating a scooter entering an intersection.”

On Dec. 18, King filed a negligence lawsuit in Miami-Dade County against Bailey and Aoki, seeking damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other losses. The suit also names Aoki under Florida’s dangerous instrumentality doctrine, which can hold vehicle owners financially liable for crashes involving drivers they permit to use their vehicles. The complaint alleges reckless conduct and indicates the plaintiffs may seek punitive damages.

Aoki, who retired from acting several years ago, has largely remained out of the public eye in recent years. She and Bailey have been married since 2011 and have four children together.

The incident has drawn significant attention on social media, where the video has garnered millions of views and sparked debate over scooter use in Miami as well as criticism of Bailey’s alleged actions.

Bailey is scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 13, 2026. Both the criminal case and the civil lawsuit remain ongoing.
