What was meant to be a joyful Halloween outing turned terrifying for one Chicago family when an armed robbery and carjacking unfolded right in front of a young trick-or-treater — all in broad daylight.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the shocking incident happened around 3:16 p.m. on Friday, October 31, in the 2600 block of South Emerald Avenue in the city’s Bridgeport neighborhood.
Surveillance video captured the horrifying moments when a 42-year-old man helped a little girl out of the back seat of his SUV. She clutched her bright orange pumpkin bucket, ready for a fun afternoon of trick-or-treating. But within seconds, the mood turned to panic.
As they stepped onto the sidewalk, an armed man sprinted across the street, gun drawn. He struck the man in the head with his weapon, knocking him against a fence while the child stood just feet away.
Police say three suspects attacked in a chillingly coordinated way. The first acted as the primary aggressor, pistol-whipping the victim; the second ran up to steal his belongings; and the third jumped into the victim’s SUV and sped away.
The suspects fled the scene, leaving the little girl shaken but physically unharmed. “She just froze,” said one witness, who lives nearby. “It all happened so fast — one second they were walking, the next it was chaos.”
Authorities later found the stolen SUV in the Lawndale neighborhood, about five miles away. Despite suffering a head injury, the victim refused medical treatment, police said.
So far, no arrests have been made. Detectives with the Chicago Police’s Area One Bureau are investigating, reviewing surveillance footage, and asking the public for help identifying the three men, described as Black males in their early 20s.
The incident has left many Bridgeport residents shaken. “You think you’re safe taking your kids trick-or-treating in the afternoon,” one local parent told. “But something like this makes you question everything.”
Police say the violent crime highlights an ongoing carjacking crisis in the city, where incidents have surged in recent years — even in typically quiet neighborhoods.
