Catherine Harding, mother to 11-year-old Ada Law—daughter of actor Jude Law and stepdaughter to Brazilian soccer star Jorginho Frello—has detailed her account of a heated hotel encounter in São Paulo involving a security guard she links to pop singer Chappell Roan, calling the interaction overly aggressive toward her excited child fan.
In an Instagram Stories video posted March 22, Harding said she felt compelled to share her perspective after fielding numerous requests for clarification, particularly in light of Roan’s earlier denial of involvement. “Honestly, I didn’t realize it would get this crazy,” she said. “A lot of you asked what actually happened.”
The family was staying at the Palácio Tangará hotel in preparation for Roan’s Lollapalooza Brasil set, where Ada—a devoted fan of tracks like “Pink Pony Club”—had been gifted concert tickets for her birthday and crafted a supportive sign.
At breakfast in the hotel’s open garden restaurant, a public space for guests, Harding spotted a woman with striking long, curly red hair and questioned if it was Roan, whose off-stage look varies from her performance style. Ada briefly stepped away to glance over, smiled upon seeing her (or possibly mistaking her for a relative due to uncertainty), but made no approach, spoke to no one, took no photos, and returned promptly to the table.
“She didn’t have her phone, she didn’t try to take a picture, she didn’t approach her,” Harding stressed. “She literally didn’t do anything. She just looked at her and smiled.” The pair resumed their meal without issue.
Moments later, a large security guard confronted them at their table with what Harding described as a “very aggressive” demeanor. “For him to come to a table with just a woman and her daughter eating breakfast, to kind of scold us … I was shocked,” she recalled. The guard allegedly accused Ada of disrespect and harassment, criticized her manners and education, urged Harding to instill better respect for privacy, and threatened a formal complaint to hotel management. The exchange left Ada “extremely shaken” and in tears.
Harding responded directly to Roan’s Instagram video from the same day, where the singer clarified that the guard was not her personal security, she had no interaction with or sighting of the family, no one disturbed her breakfast, and she issued no instructions for a confrontation. Roan apologized for any distress caused and affirmed she harbors no ill will toward children.
While praising Roan’s artistry, Harding contested aspects of the account. “100% this security guard was not a security guard of the hotel,” she asserted. “He looks after artists, so I don’t know if it was her personal security guard, but he was with her. That is all I know.” She could not verify if Roan ordered the intervention—adding “I would like to hope not”—but emphasized celebrity accountability for team conduct. “If she doesn’t want people to look at her, she is very welcome to eat breakfast in her room,” Harding added, noting the area was open to paying guests like themselves.
The episode dampened Ada’s birthday joy, prompting the family to forgo Roan’s Lollapalooza performance. Harding voiced hope that Roan was uninformed about the guard’s actions while highlighting the importance of reasonable fan-celebrity dynamics.
The controversy, which originated with Jorginho’s March 21 Instagram Stories post accusing Roan’s team of the aggressive response, has ignited widespread online discussion on privacy protections versus harmless admiration—especially from kids—with opinions split between backing the family over perceived overreach and upholding celebrity boundaries.
Harding signaled this as her closing statement: “This is the last thing I’m going to say about this now, because it’s getting a bit crazy.”
A brighter note followed when Harding shared images of herself and Ada with Lollapalooza act Lewis Capaldi, who offered apparent kindness post-incident.
The matter has extended to symbolic fallout, including Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere’s announcement barring Roan from performing at Todo Mundo no Rio during his tenure (though non-binding), while inviting Ada’s attendance as a guest.
