Brazilian Police Prevent Bomb Attack on Lady Gaga’s ‘MAYHEM’ Copacabana Show

Brazilian authorities successfully prevented a bomb plot targeting Lady Gaga’s historic free concert on Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, on May 3, 2025. The event, one of the largest free concerts ever held in Brazil, drew over 2 million attendees. The suspects planned to use improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails, specifically targeting children, adolescents, and LGBTQ+ concertgoers, with the intent to gain notoriety online.

The group behind the plot operated primarily through social media, notably Discord, where they recruited participants, including minors, to execute coordinated attacks. Their motivations included ideological hatred, particularly against the LGBTQ+ community, as well as a desire for online fame.

According to Felipe Cury, Secretary of Rio Police, the suspects explicitly aimed to target individuals based on sexual orientation, spreading hate speech and violent content to attract more participants, predominantly teenagers.

The intelligence operation, codenamed “Fake Monster”—a nod to Lady Gaga’s fans, known as “little monsters”—began after a tip was received on April 28, 2025, via the “Disque Denúncia” crime reporting hotline. The Central of Intelligence, Vigilance and Technology in Support of Public Security (CIVITAS) identified threatening messages in Discord groups linked to the concert. Multiple law enforcement agencies collaborated to neutralize the threat without causing public panic.

On the day of the concert, May 3, police executed 15 search and seizure warrants across four states—Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, and Mato Grosso—targeting nine suspects in various municipalities. Key arrests included:

  • An adult male, the group’s leader, was detained in Rio Grande do Sul for illegal firearm possession.
  • A teenage suspect was arrested in Rio de Janeiro for possessing child pornography.

Seized materials, including electronic devices, are under analysis to further understand the group’s network and methods.

Lady Gaga’s team only learned about the danger after the show, as Authorities managed the situation discreetly to ensure the event proceeded safely.

“We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning,”

A spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

”There were no known safety concerns communicated to us before or during the show.”

The show itself went off without a hitch — at least on stage. Gaga arrived in style, draped in costumes inspired by Brazil’s beloved football team. “You waited for more than 10 years for me,” she said emotionally, waving a Brazilian flag. The crowd roared. The city, which paid for the event as part of a major tourism push, is expected to make over $100 million from the weekend’s buzz.

Police had already gone all-in on safety. Around 5,000 officers were deployed, and drones, facial recognition, and metal detectors were in place to protect concertgoers. Their hard work helped ensure that Gaga’s show didn’t just go on—it sparkled.
