Fire Breaks Out at Chester Zoo in The United Kingdom

A huge blaze broke out at the Chester Zoo in Cheshire, United Kingdom. Medics treated one person for smoke inhalation. However, no other injuries have been reported. Of course, an investigation has begun looking into the cause of the fire.

The fire began at the monsoon forest habitat, an attraction billed as “the largest indoor zoo exhibit in UK history.”

Once everyone made it outside, Chester Zoo they sent out a tweet stating:

“Visitors were evacuated. The zoo’s team worked with emergency services to bring the situation under control. We are assessing the area and will update with info as we have it.”

The tourist attraction is home to more than 21,000 animals, bringing in nearly two million visitors a year. It plays a huge role in the conservation of endangered species.

Ethnic Violence in Ethiopia: 21 Dead. 61 Injured.

0

Tragic news out of south Ethiopia.

After two days of fighting between ethnic groups, at least 21 people have been killed and 61 others wounded. The last few days saw the locale near the town of Moyale, an area bordering Kenya, destroyed by violence between the Oromos and Somali Garre fighters. Violence soared after Abiy Ahmed, the first Oromo leader in modern Ethiopian history, became prime minister in April.

The war led to hundreds of refugees seeking asylum in Kenya. According to Aljazeera, a Dec. 13th United Nations report confirmed that the fighting involved heavy artillery. They also believe it’s likely that the fighting will spill over into Kenya.

“People have been killed, business premises bombed and torched, houses have also been set ablaze in the fight between Oromo and Somali Garre fighters,” says human rights activist Wario Sora.

Bird Smuggler (and 70 Birds) Caught at JFK Airport

On Saturday, a Guyanese citizen tried to smuggle 70 finches into the United States. How? By stuffing the birds in plastic hair rollers then packing them in a black duffel bag. Seriously.

Although the suspect was caught, authorities believe he’s just one of a recent trend of finch smugglers. The reason lies in the underground singing contests where gamblers would place bets on a bird’s chirping skills.

Crazy yes, but it can rake in some serious dough: A winning male finch can sell for up to $10,000! That’s not including the prize money one can get from participating in these events.

But before you go around stealing birds, note that bird smuggling poses a threat to the economy and public health. According to U.S Customs, the 2015 Avian Flu had caused $850 million in damages and the death of 50 million turkeys.

Explosion at Japanese restaurant injures 40

41 people have been injured after an explosion rocked a bar in Sapporo, North Japan.

It allegedly came from Umisakura, a Japanese-style pub around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. No deaths have been reported yet, but one is in serious condition. Authorities still don’t know the official cause. A witness told the Japan Times:

“I heard a ‘bang,’ which sounded like thunder, and my condo was shaken,” said a man in his 50s who lived nearby.”

Another witness reports smelling gas after the explosion.

Pictures and videos on Twitter captured bystanders witnessing the destruction. Windows were reported to have been broken and cars outside were covered in debris. Police have sealed off the area in case there are more explosions.

What do you all think should be done to aid the citizens of Japan?

Trump Thinks SNL is Breaking the Law

President Trump took to Twitter again to vent his rage over SNL. And as much as we’d like to believe that he can’t shock us anymore, he comes out with a new bombshell Twitter message:

“A REAL scandal is the one sided coverage, hour by hour, of networks like NBC & Democrat spin machines like Saturday Night Live. It is all nothing less than unfair news coverage and Dem commercials. Should be tested in courts, can’t be legal? Only defame & belittle! Collusion?”

Wut?

It’s nothing new for Trump to blast his opponents and critics. But to even imply that SNL is breaking the law by making fun of him is nothing short of ludicrous.

Of course, he’s a man who does nothing but the ludicrous.

What do you think? Do you think the POTUS is being serious? How far do you think he’ll go with this statement?

California Proposes a Tax on Texting

Don’t hit that send button yet! If you live in California, you may have to pay a state-wide text tax. Possibly as soon as next month.

The CPUC (Californian Public Utilities Commission) drafted the proposal as a way to help fund different phone services. This includes 911 and subsidized rates for poor residents. Although it’s not a per-text tax, if it gets passed you can expect a seven percent surcharge on your monthly texting rates.

According to CNN, the CPUC expects to vote January 10, 2019. However, the bill might already be dead in the water. The CTIA, which represents companies AT&T and T-Mobile, argues that the bill violates federal law. How? Well, yesterday the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) ruled that text messages were an information service. Because of this, only the FCC can authorize surcharges on text messaging, something they haven’t done.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

What do you think? Do you support this bill?

Raptors Remains Dominate In The East Despite Losing Streak

0

Philadelphia, Pa — The Toronto Raptors have been very impressive this season. They not only have the best record in the NBA, but they’ve been the class of the NBA . Currently the team has a record of 12-5, along with home-record of 11-4.

They’ve won 7 of their last 12 games, are currently riding a 2 losing streak. Onee of those wins being against the NBA Champs Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena. With the win the Raptors win the season series against the Warriors.

If you’re a supporter of the Raptors don’t waste your time rewarding the Raptors for their season sweep of the defending champions, as Steph Curry had some choice words for the Raptors after last night’s 113-93 defeat according to Yahoo Sports.

“We’ll remember what it’s like playing against them, but it’s 0-0 from here,” Curry told Yahoo Sports. “The sweep doesn’t mean nothing in terms of when the lights are the brightest on the biggest stage in the playoffs. Everything’s different. We’ll remember how tonight was. It’s a tough vibe, but they don’t get any extra points if we were to face them in the Finals.”

Unlike the Raptors, the Warriors have been short of impressive this season. The Warriors have struggled on the road this season, with a 7-7 road record, and were 3rd in the west, before the Thunder’s 118-114 loss last night to the New Orleans Pelicans.

“It’s a different vibe, a different feeling when you’re on the climb like Toronto is and Milwaukee is like we were a few years ago,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “It’s harder to get up for each game. There are certain nights where you can just feel it; you don’t have that energy. It’s not an excuse. It’s just reality.”

The Raptors have become one of the biggest surprises of this early NBA season. A large number of trades during offseason of the NBA has left uncertainty regarding the playoffs. Although the Raptors traded for and upgraded their team with the addition of Kawhi Leonard, based on reports there were expectations that Kawhi wouldn’t mesh well in Toronto, due to the fact he never wanted to play in Toronto to begin with. Kawhi has stepped in along with Danny Green, and the Raptors have played with impressive dominance.

In the Warriors defense, they’ve battled with injuries, and distractions. There was the Drammond Green and Kevin Durant incident which took place weeks ago, and the Warriors lost Drammond Green to a toe injury, and missed Steph Curry for multiple games before he returned on Dec 2nd, against the Detroit Pistons.

The Warriors free agent signing in the Offseason Demarcus Cousins has yet to play a game this season, as Cousins is still recovering from an ACL injury he suffered last season as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans. Many NBA experts and writers feel Cousins return will drastically help the Warriors look as dominant as most have anticipated. Before the ACL injury, Cousins averaged 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game.

Philippines Killed the Competition in Miss Universe Pageant

Catriona Gray, 24, of the Philippines was crowned the winner in the 67th Miss Universe Pageant.

She wiped out contestants from 93 other countries. Gray was crowned on Sunday, up against first runner-up, Tamaryn Green of South Africa, and the third-place finisher, Sthefany Gutierrez of Venezuela.

This year’s theme was women empowerment, and the competition took place in Bangkok, Thailand. Gray wore a fiery red gown, symbolizing the Mayon volcano. Mak Tumang, designer of the “lava gown”, wrote that the dress was the perfect compliment to Gray’s beauty, intelligence, and burning passion for her country.

This marks the fourth year that the Philippines has won the Miss Universe pageant. Prior to this year’s win, women from the Philippines have won the title in 1969, 1973, and 2015. Gray said, she always knew she would win, since she was a little girl.

Sesame Street Introduces Muppet to Teach Kids About Homelessness

0

Sesame Street is all about education, so it makes sense that they’d want to teach kids about homelessness.

Sesame Workshop, the show’s nonprofit entity, is announcing that one of the show’s muppets was getting a new storyline. Lily, a 7-year-old muppet, will experience homelessness. Previously, Lily’s character had experienced food insecurity, when her character was introduced seven years ago.

Sesame Workshop believes the new storyline will help teach kids about the rising problem in America. It may even help children affected, cope with the situation. “We want them to know that they are not alone and home is more than a house or an apartment — home is wherever the love lives,” Sherrie Westin, Sesame Workshop’s president of global impact, said in a press release.

Lily won’t appear on the actual show. Instead, she’ll appear in YouTube videos, books, and other learning materials used to educate.

Russian Influence over Social Media is Still Strong

According to a Senate report, Russian influence over social media is still very powerful.

New Knowledge, a private internet security firm, conducted the report. The firm used data from the biggest social networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter. They concluded that millions of Russian bots, linked to the Russian government, were still quite active on these sites.

New Knowledge researchers wrote the following:

“With at least some of the Russian government’s goals achieved in the face of little diplomatic or other pushback, it appears likely that the United States will continue to face Russian interference for the foreseeable future.”

This will likely be a huge factor in the current FBI investigation in Russia and Trump.
