In the extremely disturbing episode which shook the peaceful Arizona suburb, four fifth-grade girls aged 10 and 11 were booked for allegedly conspiring to kill a male co-student in the restroom of Legacy Traditional School in Surprise, Arizona. The macabre scheme reportedly being considered over lunch on October 1, 2024, needed the boy to be invited to the restroom where he would be stabbed and the attempt made to look like a suicide.
According to a police report released in June 2025, the plan was disturbingly methodical. The girls assigned roles to one another: one would bring the knife, another would act as the stabber (wearing gloves to avoid fingerprints), a third would stand lookout, and the fourth was to forge a suicide note. Their motive? The ringleader believed the boy had “cheated” on her during a school relationship an emotional spark that escalated into something unthinkable.
The plot unraveled when a fellow student overheard the group say, “just end him,” and quickly told a parent, who alerted school staff. The next morning, administrators and police searched backpacks and conducted interviews with the girls, with parents present. Each of the girls was arrested and charged with misdemeanor threatening and disorderly conduct, then released to their families and suspended pending expulsion.
Three of the girls expressed remorse. One backed out after realizing how serious it had become. Another said she joined only to avoid being labeled “weird.” But one girl stood out: she laughed during questioning and dismissed the plan as a joke.

The attack has left Surprise residents reeling, wondering how so young children could conceive of such a gruesome plot. The family of the victim, understandably shaken, called for prosecutors to pursue charges.
“We can’t ignore the threat just because they’re children,”
the parent of the boy explained.
Dr. Mark Anderson, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, weighed in on the incident during a local news broadcast.
“At this age, kids are highly impressionable. Peer pressure, immaturity, and access to violent material can take a significant toll,”
he elaborated.
“The parents need to keep tabs on digital use and establish an environment where kids can discuss emotions both the uncomfortable and the difficult ones.”
The attack generated alarms reminiscent of the 2014 “Slender Man” stabbing, where two 12-year-old girls made an attempt on the life of a classmate motivated by internet horror myths. Experts are concerned that the modern-day digital environment particularly social networks replete with uncensored material is obfuscating the difference between fantasy and reality for children’s minds.
Many parents and educators are now asking hard questions: Are schools doing enough to monitor student behavior? Are mental health resources in place and accessible? And most controversially, how should society respond when children commit or nearly commit serious crimes?
Some believe charging 10- and 11-year-olds is too extreme, arguing instead for rehabilitation-focused programs. Others feel consequences are necessary to signal the seriousness of such actions, regardless of age.

“The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We acted immediately with law enforcement and followed all legal and disciplinary protocols.”
