The nearly eight-year fight in the courts-undeniably some of the bitterest battles between two of Hollywood’s stars in very public, and no doubt, private battles-seems to finally be over, as an agreement has been reached to end the divorce case involving Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Of note, as of December 30th, 2024, they signed the settlement to one of the most high-profile Celebrity Divorce splits of recent history. They’re bringing closure to what had been more than a decade-long romantic relationship of this iconic couple.
Nicknamed by the fans as “Brangelina“, Jolie and Pitt were together since 2004-after the filming of the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith–living together for 12 years two of those as husband and wife. In more ways than one, it has been treated like a Grimm Brothers fairytale in Tinseltown; still, the world crash-landed on them on September 19, 2016, when Jolie filed a divorce citing irreconcilable differences-and the glittering partnership blew up into an inordinately long, very hostile legal battle.
The six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne – were the focal point of their divorce proceedings. She initially filed for full physical custody of the kids, while he wanted joint custody with visitation rights. After the 2016 private jet incident where Pitt was accused by Jolie of a physical altercation involving their kids, allegations of abuse against Pitt arose. An investigation was done by the FBI and child services, which ended with them clearing Pitt’s name by stating no charges were being filed. But even then, the Custody Battles persisted for many years. By the time the settlement was finally concluded, four of the kids were of age, so custody was only required to be sorted out for the twins, aged 16. These stretched hearings had taken a dent on the family, and Jolie had been engrossed in building a securer and more stable environment for her children.
Another major point of contention was the couple’s $164 million French estate, Château Miraval.
The estate, which also has a highly regarded winery, became a point of contention in their divorce when Jolie sold her interest to a third party; Pitt filed a lawsuit against her. Pitt said the sale of Jolie was “vindictive” and in violation of former agreements between them, while Jolie countered through her attorneys that he was trying to bully her into silence about his alleged abuse. The settlement signed at the very end of December includes no financial details, but among other things, seems to include waiving support for either spouse in the future-unresolved issues about Chateau Miraval may still be filed in court. For a couple, the agreement marks probably the most important step put into place so far relating to their legal disputes.
James Simon, the attorney for Jolie, described the settlement as one that comes with a sense of relief from his client. “Angelina is exhausted but relieved that this part of the process is over,” he said. “Her focus remains on finding peace and healing for her family.” Pitt, meanwhile, has said nothing publicly about the settlement, but has addressed the substance abuse that marred their split.
Besides such financial losses, the psychological-emotional cost of this eight-year fight is tremendous. Of course, it is basically the end for Jolie and Pitt-who formerly were one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples. Where the children are concerned, the long fight has become deeply affecting them, along with the outside scrutiny all over the public domain apart from their own private strife within the family.
The divorce of Jolie-Pitt also underlines a turn in the modus operandi of celebrity divorces, with the private judges that the couple employed highlighting the complicated ways in which privacy is maintained in the public eye.
Despite all the challenges, both of them have continued to perform very well in their fields. Jolie has been centered more on directing and acting, as also getting critical acclaim recently playing Maria Callas in the film Maria.
