Andrew Garfield recently spoke to his despair on a special visit to Sesame Street. To promote his latest film, We Live in Time, Garfield took a break from all the usual over-the-top, glitter-filled press junkets to have a very personal talk with none other than Elmo.
His touching, given on his official Elmo social media accounts, went out to fans and showed a sensitive side of this actor that many may never have heard or seen before.
The video opens with the loveable red Elmo greeting “Mr. Andrew.” As is usually the nature of Elmo, he is friendly and concerned, asking Garfield how he is. The actor warms upfully, saying it’s these kinds of appearances which make him happy; seeing Elmo.
But then, in a vulnerable moment, Garfield shares that he has been thinking about his mother, who died recently. “I just miss her a lot,” he confides in an emotion all too familiar to many.
Elmo being the empathetic friend that he is, says sorry first. Garfield reassures him that it’s perfectly fine to miss somebody. “You know, Elmo always feels really, really sad when he misses somebody,” Elmo shares to which Garfield says rather thoughtfully.
He explains that the sadness associated with missing someone can actually be a beautiful gift. “In a way, it kind of means that you really loved someone when you miss them,” he says, recalling the joyful memories of hugs and cuddles from his mother. “It makes me feel close to her when I miss her in a strange way.”

Garfield spoke about his mother’s fight with pancreatic cancer that finally took her life in 2019. He is mainly known for his lead roles in films like “Tick, Tick. Boom!” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
“I’m just thinking about my mom today. She passed away not too long ago, and you know, I just miss her a lot,” he said in a choked voice. This simple and powerful speech resonated with many to bring into view the universal experience of loss.
The actor also described his pain as a “precise agony,” which just shows the deep ache in his heart. He showed how her death left vacant space in his life, and sometimes it was too hard to do anything. “There was a period when I felt unable to do anything,” he revealed.
Yet, amidst the sadness, Garfield also reflected on the joy his mother brought into his life. “When I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy,” he shared, emphasizing the dual nature of grief—where love and loss coexist.
Garfield fondly recalled the special moments they shared, like “all the cuddles” and “all the hugs.” These memories serve as a comforting reminder of the warmth and affection his mother provided throughout his life. He described her as “the purest angel,” a gentle and loving presence who nurtured his creative spirit.

Her encouragement during his teenage years played a crucial role in his decision to pursue a career in the arts, which he humorously likened to “joining the circus.”
In the wake of his mother’s passing, Garfield has dedicated performances to her memory, showcasing how her influence continues to resonate in his work. He believes that grief has become a way for him to feel connected to her.
“I hope this grief stays with me because it’s all the unexpressed love that I didn’t get to tell her,” he expressed, revealing a profound understanding of how love and loss intertwine.
The conversation with Elmo was not just a personal reflection; it also touched on the creative process that Garfield engages in as he navigates his grief. He emphasized the importance of delivering strong lyrics and heartfelt performances, catering to the emotional needs of his audience.
“Sadness is kind of a gift,” he said, suggesting that through his pain, he has discovered a deeper appreciation for the love shared with those who have passed.
As the conversation unfolds, Garfield shares a delightful secret with Elmo: “Elmo was my mummy’s favorite.” This revelation brings joy to both of them, culminating in a warm hug that speaks volumes about their connection. Elmo then turns to the camera, inviting viewers to celebrate the important people they miss, creating a shared space for collective remembrance.

This is so much more than a Sesame Street conversation with a charismatic character and a great actor; this is a beautiful reflection on love and loss. The show was always intended to deal with crucial topics, and this moment will be no different. This storyline not only normalizes grief but also encourages viewers of all ages to embrace their feelings.
