Father of Nine Survives Chest Gunshot After Offering to Buy Teen’s Snacks

Alvin McDowell just wanted to stop a kid from stealing a bag of chips and a drink. Moments later, the 51-year-old Louisville father of nine was fighting for his life with a bullet in his chest.

On the evening of October 22, 2026, McDowell walked about a block from his home to the Walgreens in the 3400 block of West Broadway. He spotted a boy he believed was around 13 trying to take the snacks without paying.

“I turned around, and I saw the little bitty fellow, and he was stealing, and I was like, ‘You don’t need to do that, I’ll take care of that,’”

McDowell told WDRB+WAVE.

Another teenager then approached with a gun pointed toward McDowell’s face. McDowell said he tried to push the weapon away. The teen fired once. The shot struck McDowell in the chest.

Doctors later told him the bullet came within about two inches of his heart.

“I didn’t think I was going to make it,”

he said.

Police found McDowell with the chest wound around 7 p.m. and took him to UofL Hospital. Officers initially described the injuries as non-life-threatening. He underwent surgeries and spent weeks in treatment before returning home to recover.

His nephew, Cherron Casey, described him as the type who never turns away from someone in need.

“Let’s say there’s a homeless person outside the gas station, if they need money, he never hesitates to reach into his pocket and give to others,”

Casey said.

McDowell has publicly thanked the first responders.

“Thank you for saving my life because that’s what you all did for me,”

He said.

The suspect fled before officers arrived. On October 23, Louisville Metro Police Department’s Non-Fatal Shooting Unit arrested a 15-year-old in connection with the shooting. The juvenile was charged with first-degree assault. The investigation remained ongoing in early reports. Police have not publicly detailed a motive, and the teen has been charged, not convicted.

The shooting happened in West Louisville at a time when citywide figures showed declines: homicide victims down about 23 percent and nonfatal shooting victims down about 25 percent compared with the same period in 2025, according to the mayor’s office. Those broader trends do not explain this specific case.

McDowell is home recovering. His decision to offer help over a bag of chips and a drink nearly cost him everything. The contrast between that ordinary gesture and the sudden violence remains the part of the story that sticks.
