Anne Hathaway, the Oscar-winning actress known for her role in Juno, has pushed back against praise for promoting five films while pregnant, saying ordinary expectant mothers deserve more recognition than a well-supported Hollywood star.
In an interview with AP Entertainment during the press tour for her latest movie, the Oscar-winning actress addressed the attention surrounding her busy year. “Let’s not overpraise the pampered actress. There’s a lot of pregnant women out there at home and in the workplace who, you know, didn’t get a manicure this morning,” Hathaway said. “I’m very happy to do my job. I have so much support.”
Hathaway, 43, is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman. The couple, who married in 2012, already have two sons: Jonathan, born in 2016, and Jack, born in 2019. She announced the pregnancy on June 19, 2026, with an Instagram video set to Barbara Lewis’s “Baby, I’m Yours,” revealing her growing bump.
The comments came as Hathaway wrapped a demanding stretch of red-carpet appearances and interviews. Her 2026 slate included Mother Mary (released April 2026), The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 2026), Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (July 2026), The End of Oak Street (August 2026), and Verity, the Colleen Hoover adaptation that opened in theaters on October 2, 2026.
She has repeatedly credited the help available to her. In a separate conversation with Extra TV, Hathaway said it is easy for people to look at her schedule and assume she is doing it all alone. “I have so much help. I’m having — I have so much support. I’m so lucky,” she noted.
Hathaway has signaled that the intensive promotional period is ending. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said of Verity, “The movie comes out on October 2nd. And on October 3rd, I’m going to vanish in a plume of smoke and you’re not going to see me until you have to.” She plans time off before returning to work in March 2027 to film Days of Thunder 2 with Tom Cruise.
Born Anne Jacqueline Hathaway on Nov. 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Millburn, New Jersey, she rose to fame with The Princess Diaries and later won an Academy Award for her role as Fantine in Les Misérables. Throughout the current pregnancy she has remained visible on red carpets, at times drawing online debate over her maternity fashion choices, including a bare-bump look at the End of Oak Street premiere that prompted speculation she was wearing a prosthetic. She responded on Instagram with the caption “Fake hair, real bump.”
Public reaction to her AP remarks focused on the acknowledgment of privilege. Pregnant women on social media said they felt seen by the distinction she drew between her circumstances and those of people working without comparable support or glam teams. One commenter wrote that as an elementary school teacher in her final trimester she appreciated the honesty. Others praised the self-awareness, noting that celebrity work during pregnancy often receives disproportionate attention.
Hathaway has described the year as both exhausting and expansive. In an interview with Extra she observed that it is possible to accomplish a great deal while tired, and that the experience has expanded her patience and grace. After the Verity premiere she shared a lighthearted TikTok with her glam team joking about the demands of a fifth press tour while pregnant, signaling she was ready for the break she had promised.
The actress is due later this year. For now she has stepped back from public view as planned, leaving behind a clear message that the everyday labor of pregnancy, performed without Hollywood resources, warrants recognition of its own.
