Elon Musk, the world’s richest person with a net worth hovering near $917 billion, is currently living in an Airstream travel trailer parked at xAI’s sprawling data center campus in Memphis while personally overseeing its rapid expansion.
Musk revealed the unusual arrangement during a video appearance at the All-In Summit earlier this week. Joining SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell, he told the hosts:
“I am coming to you today from the palace that I live in in Memphis, which is an Airstream trailer.”
Shotwell immediately confirmed the setup, noting that Musk’s hands-on approach is consistent with his long-standing work style:
“This is Elon, by the way, doing what people don’t believe he does. He sleeps on the factory floor. He’s in Memphis helping build buildings.”
Musk later reinforced the news on X, simply posting, “It’s a nice Airstream.”
The trailer is stationed steps from the construction and server halls at the Colossus campus, which straddles the Tennessee-Mississippi state line. Musk has been on site for extended periods in recent months as the company races to bring additional Nvidia GB200- and GB300-class GPUs online. Reports indicate he has been staying in the Airstream for more than 10 days at the time of his All-In appearance, preferring to remain on the grounds rather than commute.
The decision fits a familiar pattern. During Tesla’s production crises, Musk slept on the factory floor in Fremont. After acquiring Twitter (now X) in 2022, he spent months sleeping on a couch at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. The Airstream arrangement allows him to stay immediately adjacent to the work without the distractions of a conventional residence.
The Colossus Buildout
The Memphis complex began with Colossus 1 in 2024, which reached initial operational capacity in roughly 122 days. It has since expanded into multiple facilities, including Colossus 2 (branded Macrohard), Minihard, and supporting structures. By mid-2026 the campus had scaled to approximately 1 gigawatt of AI compute capacity, with further growth underway.
Surplus capacity has already been leased to major customers. Anthropic secured a significant rental agreement, while Google contracted for access to roughly 110,000 GPUs starting in October 2026 at approximately $920 million per month. SpaceX absorbed xAI earlier this year in a deal valued around $250 billion, folding the AI operations into its broader strategy and rebranding the effort under SpaceXAI.
Power infrastructure remains a central focus. Temporary natural-gas turbines that helped accelerate the initial build are being phased out under a regulatory agreement with Mississippi authorities. A permanent 1.2-gigawatt plant is under construction, and Tesla has deployed hundreds of Megapack battery units at the site—forming one of the largest grid-scale battery installations in the United States—to support reliability and reduce reliance on temporary generation.
Musk did not specify the exact Airstream model. Compact versions of the classic aluminum trailer measure as little as 16 feet and include basic sleeping, kitchen, and bathroom facilities. Larger models offer more space. He has shared no interior photos, describing the unit only as “nice.”
The arrangement is temporary and project-driven rather than a permanent lifestyle shift. Musk has previously stated a preference for minimizing personal real-estate holdings. For now, the world’s richest man is living in a silver travel trailer beside one of the largest AI computing clusters on Earth, prioritizing proximity to the work over conventional comfort.
