Anita Wing Lee never put “tall” on her list of must-haves for a partner. The Toronto-area storyteller and director, who stands about 5-foot-4, assumed that detail would take care of itself. What mattered more, she later explained, were substance, character, faith, kindness and a shared sense of purpose.
That clarity led her to marry Tim Muttoo, the engineer and humanitarian who stands about 4 feet tall, on June 21, 2025. Their wedding photos and the story behind them later drew massive online attention.
The pair first connected in 2021 through mutual friends at a birthday party in the Toronto area. Both had spent time in East Africa around 2012 without meeting, and both lived roughly 20 minutes apart for years without knowing it. Anita noticed Tim’s feet dangling from his chair but focused on the fact that their shared circle of friends spoke well of him.
Their friendship grew through long conversations, walks, dinners and overlapping interests in travel, faith and helping others. Tim, a licensed professional engineer with a master’s in public health, co-founded the clean-water charity H2O 4 ALL, which has worked in more than 100 communities across roughly a dozen countries. Anita has built a career producing stories and content across continents.
Tim developed romantic feelings first. During a 2023 trip connected to his charity work, he voiced interest. Anita, still seeing him primarily as a close friend, was hesitant partly because of the height difference. She had pictured looking up at a partner. She even enlisted her sister to help craft a clear message that kept things platonic.
Later reflection changed that. Inspired in part by the story of motivational speaker Nick Vujicic and his wife, Anita realized Tim already matched the qualities she valued most. In November 2023 she told him her feelings had grown. They became engaged on September 30, 2024, after Tim asked her parents for their blessing.
“I never prayed for someone tall,”
Anita wrote in a July 2025 Instagram post that became central to the viral conversation.
“You know how people write out lists of what they’re hoping for in a partner? I never actually wrote down ‘tall’ because I just assumed God would bring me someone tall… But I never actually added it to my list, because there were other things that mattered more.”
She continued:
“As I got to know Tim, I saw he was all of these things. But… he wasn’t tall. And when I asked God about it, He said, ‘Well, it wasn’t on your list.’”
They married at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Streetsville, Mississauga, a historic church with long ties to Tim’s family. Photographer Allana Mariiee of Legacy Lens Photography intentionally celebrated rather than minimized their height difference in the portraits.
The couple initially used the pictures to share with the guests attending their wedding. This inspired them to share further on different social platforms. The magazine stated that out of the couple’s eight Instagram pictures related to the wedding, the total number of views exceeded 100 million. Some people believed that the pictures were generated by artificial intelligence technology. However, the couple and the photographer have always refuted this theory due to the presence of records of their wedding ceremony and the fact that they continue appearing in the media, making their photographs credible.
According to Tim:
“We are happy that people understand that love is not only about looks and wealth, but it is also about seeing, choosing, and understanding another person’s heart.”
