A Maumelle High School football player had completed his warmups, assumed his positions, and been on the field for almost an hour when he noticed something happen within his helmet. The object inside the helmet, which turned out to be a live cottonmouth snake about two feet long, was discovered on August 6, 2026, in Maumelle, Arkansas.
The young man handed his helmet to the defensive coach. The athletic director, Kirk Horton, and his colleagues examined the underside of the helmet’s liner and stopped in their tracks.
“It was more just shock and disbelief,”
Said Horton to the press.
“My odds of winning the lottery are better than this happening in ten years.”
Staff sealed the helmet in a tote bag and called Maumelle Animal Services. Officers arrived expecting a possible copperhead. Director Chris Davis and his team examined it and identified a cottonmouth, also known as a water moccasin.
“It was unreal,”
Davis said.
“You had to kind of be there and take pictures to say this was real.”
He added that in years of removing snakes from car vents, engines, purses and backpacks, he had never pulled one from a football helmet.
The snake was wedged in so tight that they had to dump water in his helmet in order to get him out. Then they used tongs to remove the snake and brought it to a wooded area away from the school. The player then put on another helmet and resumed his practice.
Cottonmouths are the pit vipers of the south central United States, commonly found around Arkansas. While their bites are certainly painful, death is rare, especially when the victim seeks treatment. Authorities figured that the snake was simply seeking a place to hide, perhaps after a meal.
The coaches later advised players to check helmets, shoes, gloves and other equipment for snakes. Maumelle Animal Services posted the same message online, saying that a moment’s care could prevent a potentially deadly encounter with wildlife. The player was unhurt, as was the snake. In an offseason that has seen plenty of rain, heartbreak and soul-searching, maybe the longest odds of all were overcome tonight.
