A full-scale, hyper-realistic dragon just soared through the real skies above Scotland, leaving locals and House of the Dragon fans in absolute awe.
In a next-level marketing move, a massive animatronic replica of Syrax — the fierce dragon ridden by Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) — glided over Glasgow’s River Clyde this week. The breathtaking flights, captured in the golden early-morning light near the OVO Hydro and Scottish Event Campus, blurred the line between Westerosi fantasy and reality.
The spectacle doubles as major promotion for Season 3 of HBO’s hit series and the upcoming Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Don’t call it a drone — this is pure engineering sorcery. Built by German aeronautics firm Airstage (with support from Electric Sheep Events), the eight-meter-wingspan Syrax weighs just 13 kilograms yet packs 23 individually controlled moving parts, from its expressive head and tail to articulated wings and hidden impellers tucked into its legs for eerily lifelike propulsion. It hits speeds of up to 35 km/h with graceful, bird-like maneuvers.
The team poured nearly 3,000 hours over three months into the build, using official 3D production scans straight from the House of the Dragon set for spot-on accuracy. A carbon fiber and aluminum skeleton provides the frame, wrapped in lightweight vacuum-formed foam and finished with meticulous hand airbrushing to capture every scaly detail.
Pilot Dennis Gutowsky couldn’t hide his excitement. “We built this beautiful flying dragon. Her name is Syrax, and this thing has 23 moving parts, which all work together,” he said. “We have moving rudders, moving propellers, a moving tail, and also moving wings. It’s very cool to fly a dragon… It’s very special because actually I fly RC planes, and that’s totally different. You have to train a lot to fly like this.”
The dragon — which previously made waves flying near London’s Tower of London — quickly went viral as stunned Glaswegians shared footage of the mythical beast against the Scottish sunrise. For a moment, it felt like the realms had truly collided.
The timing is perfect. With Season 3 of House of the Dragon captivating audiences and Glasgow gearing up to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, HBO has delivered one of the most unforgettable promotional stunts in recent memory — one that bridges blockbuster TV with real-world wonder.
