FBI Foils Alleged Terror Plot Targeting UFC Event Near White House

The FBI announced Tuesday that it foiled an alleged multi-phase terror plot aimed at the star-studded UFC Freedom 250 event, which took place on the White House South Lawn on June 14 as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

FBI Director Kash Patel said authorities arrested five suspects in a multi-state operation that began around June 10, just days before the high-profile mixed martial arts spectacle. The event, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, featured a full UFC octagon — dubbed “The Claw” — installed on the historic grounds for the first time, drawing roughly 4,300 attendees including service members, Trump family members and other VIPs.

According to investigators, the suspects planned a coordinated attack involving explosive-laden drones targeting areas near the venue. The alleged goal was to spark panic among the crowd and direct fleeing attendees toward pre-positioned sniper teams for a secondary assault. A potential “second wave” involving an attempt to breach White House gates was also reportedly part of the scheme.

The plot was uncovered through monitoring of encrypted communications, such as Signal chats, which pointed to a broader network of up to 23-24 individuals. Preliminary reports suggest motives tied to anti-capitalist or anti-government ideologies, though investigations remain ongoing into possible international connections and additional co-conspirators. No injuries or disruptions occurred at the event, which proceeded under intense security.

“The rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation stopped these allegedly planned attacks cold,” Director Patel said in a statement. “We will continue to protect large public gatherings and national celebrations like this one.”

The UFC Freedom 250 delivered a night of decisive action inside the octagon. In the main event, Justin Gaethje pulled off a stunning upset, stopping champion Ilia Topuria by TKO (corner stoppage in Round 4) to capture the lightweight title. All bouts on the card ended by stoppage — a first in UFC history — with additional heavyweight action including matchups featuring fighters such as Ciryl Gane and Alex Pereira. President Trump was cageside alongside UFC CEO Dana White for the Paramount+ broadcast.

The event had already drawn legal scrutiny and public debate over the unprecedented use of the White House South Lawn for a professional combat sports card. It unfolded without incident amid the heightened threat environment surrounding major national milestones.

Charges against the suspects are expected to include conspiracy to commit terrorism and related offenses, with more details anticipated as the investigation advances. The foiled plot comes amid broader concerns about security at large-scale, politically symbolic public events in the lead-up to America’s semiquincentennial celebrations.
