Air Canada Pilot Arrested for Flying 900+ Flights With Fake License Over 17 Years

A veteran Air Canada pilot has been arrested for allegedly using forged documents to serve as captain on hundreds of commercial flights over nearly two decades, despite lacking the required high-level license.

Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Barrie, Ontario, was taken into custody on June 1, 2026, by Peel Regional Police. He faces seven criminal charges, including fraud over $5,000, two counts of uttering forged documents, three counts of possession of a counterfeit mark, and public mischief. Wall was released on his own recognizance and is set to appear in court on June 29 in Brampton, Ontario.

According to authorities, Wall joined Air Canada in 1998 as a first officer and was promoted to captain in 2009. Police allege he never obtained the mandatory Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL-A) required to captain large passenger jets like the Boeing 767, 777, and 787. Instead, he allegedly used fraudulent and altered documents to secure and maintain the position while captaining more than 900 domestic and international flights through 2025, carrying tens of thousands of passengers and earning nearly $3 million CAD (approximately $2.9 million USD).

The case, dubbed “Project Icarus” by investigators, came to light in 2025 during a routine credential review by Transport Canada at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Anomalies in Wall’s documentation prompted Air Canada to remove him from duty — though he had already retired earlier that year — and sparked a full criminal probe involving search warrants and coordination with the airline and regulators.

“While Mr. Wall held a commercial pilot’s licence and demonstrated competency during recurrent training, the captain position on large passenger jets requires additional rigorous qualifications,” Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said, comparing the situation to “a family doctor performing brain surgery.” Investigators have likened the long-term deception to the plot of Catch Me If You Can.

Air Canada emphasized in a statement that safety was never compromised. The airline noted that all pilots undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months and annual flight checks with certified Transport Canada check-pilots. An internal audit found no impact on other pilots and confirmed Wall passed his required checks.

“Safety is our top priority,” the airline said. “We take licensing requirements extremely seriously and fully cooperated with authorities.”

Wall, who had a prior 12-year career as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force and held leadership roles in the Air Canada Pilots Association, also worked part-time at Georgian College after retirement assisting military-connected students. The college has since removed his biographical page.

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah described the case as striking at public trust, while Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the detection system functioned as intended and that the government would review for potential improvements. Wall has additionally been fined by Transport Canada.

As the matter remains before the courts, further details could emerge during proceedings.
