Henry Cavill has signed on to star opposite Kevin Hart in an untitled spy action-comedy for Netflix, the streamer announced Thursday (June 5).
The project will be directed by McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol), whose credits include the Charlie’s Angels film and The Babysitter series. The script is written by brothers Adam and Aaron Nee (Masters of the Universe) and Jonathan Tropper, based on an original short story by Sean Lewis.
According to reports, the film follows two rival spies whose double lives intersect when their wives become fast friends in a Lamaze prenatal class. Forced into each other’s personal orbits, the men must reluctantly team up as partners while navigating the challenges of impending fatherhood, all while their espionage worlds threaten to collide in “unexpectedly hilarious and dangerous ways.”
The high-concept premise blends high-octane action and espionage with buddy-comedy dynamics and domestic humor, evoking a mix of True Lies and contemporary action-comedies.
Kevin Hart, who also produces via his HartBeat Productions, is expected to bring his signature comedic energy to one of the lead roles. Cavill, known for his action-hero turns in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Witcher and recent projects including Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey, will portray the other spy. The actor has a solid history with Netflix through The Witcher and the Enola Holmes films.
The producing team brings significant firepower to the project. Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment (behind Stranger Things, Deadpool & Wolverine and more) is involved alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort banner and HartBeat. Specific roles for the wives and supporting cast have not yet been announced.
The film is in active early development with no title, filming start date or release window confirmed. Given the star power and pedigree of the filmmakers and producers involved, the project is expected to move quickly through Netflix’s pipeline.
This pairing marks another major streaming commitment for both Hart and Cavill, who have each built successful franchises across film and television. Industry watchers are already buzzing about the potential onscreen chemistry between Hart’s high-energy comedy and Cavill’s charismatic presence.
