Hollywood star Vin Diesel was overcome with emotion during a midnight screening celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Fast and the Furious at the Cannes Film Festival, delivering a heartfelt tribute to his late co-star and friend Paul Walker.
The special event took place on May 13–14, 2026, at the Palais des Festivals, drawing a packed audience for the original 2001 film that launched one of cinema’s most successful franchises. Diesel was joined on the red carpet and stage by Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Meadow Walker — Paul Walker’s daughter, now 27 — for what became one of the festival’s most emotional highlights.
After the film concluded, the cast took the stage to a standing ovation. Diesel, visibly choked up, reflected on the deep bond he shared with Walker both on and off screen.
“It wasn’t on the script at first that this blond-haired, blue-eyed guy would be a brother to me,” Diesel said. “I pray that in your life you can have a brother like Paul.”
He added, “This is the film where brotherhood was introduced to our millennium by myself and my brother Pablo [Paul],” and openly acknowledged the difficulty of revisiting the movie: “Watching this film is so hard.”
At one point, Diesel briefly stepped away, telling the audience, “I’m gonna go and shed a tear real quick,” before returning to compose himself. He highlighted Meadow Walker’s presence, noting the profound moment when she told him she was now the same age Paul was when filming the first movie. Diesel, who is Meadow’s godfather, shared a warm embrace with her on stage.
The entire cast appeared moved, with Rodriguez and Brewster also showing tears. Audience members left the screening emotional, many in tears, as the event underscored the genuine “family” that developed among the actors — a theme that extended far beyond the films’ marketing after Walker’s tragic death in a car accident in November 2013.
Walker appeared in the first seven installments of the series. His absence has been deeply felt, and tributes like this one continue to keep his memory alive.
Diesel also touched on the franchise’s future, confirming that the final film, Fast Forever, remains planned for 2028, crediting fans for the series’ enduring success. The Fast & Furious movies have collectively grossed more than $7 billion worldwide.
The anniversary screening marked a full-circle moment for Diesel, who first visited Cannes 31 years earlier with his short film Multi-Facial.
