Authorities say a 21-year-old man opened fire during a late-night car show in Indianapolis, leaving three people seriously injured.
Carlos Contreras has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, along with multiple other felonies, after police say he carried out a violent attack just before midnight on Sept. 20, 2025. The shooting happened behind a Jimmy John’s restaurant on Georgetown Road, where hundreds of people had gathered for a large car show.
According to court documents obtained by prosecutors, surveillance footage from the restaurant captured the harrowing moments. In the video, Contreras and another unidentified man can be seen firing at the victims almost immediately after they appeared on screen.
“There was no argument or disturbance beforehand,” officials said. “Within about seven seconds of walking into the frame, the victims were struck.”
Police say Contreras first fired a Glock 19 handgun that had been illegally modified with a device called a “Glock switch,” which allows the weapon to fire continuously like a machine gun. He then allegedly retrieved a mini-Draco rifle from his vehicle and fired additional rounds at the wounded victims as they lay on the ground.
Investigators later collected 47 shell casings from the scene. One victim was shot 11 times and required emergency surgery.
“This escalation of violence, targeting already defenseless victims, is particularly egregious,” prosecutors said.
After the shooting, witnesses told police they saw a black Dodge Challenger speeding away. Officers quickly located the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over when they tried to stop it.
The chase ended when the car became stuck on railroad tracks near Industrial Boulevard. Inside, police say they found an AK-style pistol and a Glock magazine in plain view. A search later turned up the weapons believed to have been used in the shooting, including the modified Glock.
Contreras was treated for minor injuries from the crash at Eskenazi Hospital before being booked into the Marion County Jail. He declined to be interviewed by investigators.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears spoke out about the growing concern over Glock switches, which can be bought illegally for as little as $10 and are sometimes 3D-printed.
“The spread of Glock ‘switch’ devices poses a grave threat to our neighborhoods,” Mears said in a statement. “The defendant is accused of firing multiple rounds in seconds, leaving three people with life-altering injuries.”
Gun shop owner Bryce Curry of Premier Firearms explained just how dangerous the devices are. “The switch allows guns to fire at a rate of 12,000 rounds per minute,” he told . “They’re extremely difficult to control, and the risk of hitting unintended targets skyrockets.”
The Georgetown Road shooting was part of a weekend of gun violence across Indianapolis that left 15 people injured. Police Chief Chris Bailey called the incidents “absolutely senseless,” adding, “Guns are not the solution to anything.”
Authorities also believe a second shooter was involved in the Georgetown Road case and are asking for the public’s help in identifying that individual.
The investigation remains ongoing.
