Ye Confronts Kris Jenner Over Mental Health and Public Image in New Documentary In Whose Name?

One of the biggest buzzed-about moments in that new doc “In Whose Name?” directed by Nico Ballesteros and just dropped on September 19, 2025 has gotta be this intense back-and-forth between Ye(formerly Kanye West) and his ex-mother-in-law, Kris Jenner.

The clip’s from around 2018, and Ye’s rocking that red “Make America Great Again” hat, getting all fired up about the meds they put him on after his bipolar diagnosis. He’s yelling,

“I’d rather be dead than in jail. I’d rather be dead than on medication,”

Totally pushing back against what the doctors suggested after he got hospitalized in 2016.

Things heat up fast. Ye calls out Jenner and his then-wife Kim Kardashian for making him feel emasculated while he was on the stuff.

“Nobody in the family took any blame for my hospital stay… That’s at least half of what folks are saying. Am I wrong?”

He demands.

Jenner, tearing up, shoots back:

“Yeah, I’m saying yeah. And I love you. I don’t want you to not be perfect. I love you, and I want my daughter to love you the way you want her to.”

Her boyfriend at the time, Corey Gamble, just sits there quiet through the whole blowup, which has people online ripping into him for it.

Ye’s 48 now, got diagnosed with bipolar back in 2016, and he’s always been outspoken about hating psych meds says they kill his creative spark and independence. In the film, he even floats the idea that maybe it was a misdiagnosis, and his issues were more like “a form of autism” instead.

That line about preferring death over meds has really stirred the pot, especially when it comes to the stigma around mental health for Black guys in the spotlight.

Experts in mental health say meds aren’t the be-all-end-all, but ditching them completely can be risky. Folks pushing for better awareness say to take Ye’s words as part of his personal battles, not some blanket advice for everyone.

The doc pulls from over 3,000 hours of footage spanning six years. Ballesteros trails Ye through his wildest times like that doomed 2020 run for president, his marriage to Kim falling apart, the big blowout with Adidas and other brands after his 2022 antisemitic rants, and some awkward behind-the-scenes stuff at SNL.

You’ve got cameos from big names like Elon Musk, Lady Gaga, Drake, and LeBron James, giving peeks into Ye’s world. But really, it’s all about the raw, personal stuff vulnerability, paranoia, family fights that usually stay hidden.

That Jenner scene blew up online, sparking all kinds of chatter. Some people love how real and honest it is, saying it’s sparking real talks about mental health, owning up to stuff, and fame’s toll. Others slam it for turning private hurt into entertainment.

Corey staying mum? That’s got folks mad, wondering why nobody jumped in to cool things down.

Ye’s fans say the footage backs up his gripes about being manipulated by family and media. But critics worry it’s glossing over the damage from his antisemitic stuff and political drama.

At the end of the day, “In Whose Name?” gives this unfiltered, sometimes cringey view of one of the most divisive celebs out there. Diving back into his 2016 hospital stint, his med resistance, and broken family bonds it makes you think when fame and mental health crash, who gets to tell the tale? And what’s the price?

“It’s bigger than Ye. It’s how we handle talking about vulnerable people in his name, or in anyone’s.”
