MJ’s Chimp Bubbles Alive & Well at 42 in Florida Sanctuary

Many fans of the King of Pop often ask, where is Bubbles now?

The chimpanzee who once shared the spotlight with Michael Jackson is alive and thriving at 42, living a peaceful life at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida. This former celebrity pet, known for his quirky antics and close bond with the pop star, has found a new home where he now leads his own chimpanzee group, enjoying a life far from the glitz of Hollywood.

The story of Michael Jackson and Bubbles the chimp began in 1983 when the singer adopted the eight-month-old from a Texas research facility. Bubbles lived a charmed life, first at Jackson’s family home in Encino before moving to the iconic Neverland Ranch in 1988. There, he reportedly slept in a crib in Jackson’s bedroom, ate candy from the theater, and even joined the singer on tour, famously sipping green tea with the mayor of Osaka during the Bad world tour.

As Bubbles matured, his increasing size and natural chimpanzee aggression made it impossible for him to remain as a house pet. By 2003, concerns over the safety of Jackson’s newborn son, Prince Michael II, reportedly prompted the difficult decision to find him a new home.

After a brief stay at a trainer’s ranch, Bubbles found his permanent home in 2005 at the Center for Great Apes Florida, a sanctuary dedicated to providing lifelong care for primates. Now considered elderly for a chimpanzee, Bubbles is his group’s calm and gentle leader, including friends like Oopsie and Ripley. He spends his days painting, climbing trees, and playfully interacting with his environment.

In April 2024, the sanctuary celebrated Bubbles’ 42nd birthday and his 19th year in their care, confirming that he is healthy and content in his retirement. The sanctuary notes that his care costs approximately $30,000 per year, supported by Michael Jackson’s estate and devoted fans who still send treats and blankets.

The journey of Michael Jackson’s pet chimpanzee from a pop culture icon to a quiet sanctuary resident highlights the significant challenges of keeping wild animals as pets. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of sanctuaries that provide a safe haven for retired primates. While his life in the spotlight is over, Bubbles’ story remains a fascinating chapter in pop history, preserved by the dedicated care he receives at his Florida home.
