Stephen Jackson, a 47-year-old former NBA player, recently shared his experiences from a visit to Chicago’s OBlock neighborhood. He spoke about spending time with a teenager named Ty Munna and later supporting him through a tough legal battle. OBlock, located at the 6400 block of South Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, is a well-known area tied to rappers like King Von and Chief Keef. It also has a reputation for gang-related activity.
In 2022, Jackson traveled to OBlock to host a toy drive. During this visit, he donated $1,000 to the community. While there, he honored local traditions and paid respects to King Von, a rapper who died in 2020. His trip stirred different reactions. Some people admired his effort to give back, while others wondered about his true intentions.
During this visit, Jackson met Ty Munna, who was only 15 years old at the time. In a recent interview, Jackson recalled hanging out with Ty Munna and others in the neighborhood. He mentioned they smoked together during one of these moments.
“I pulled up to OBlock and just chilled with the guys,”
Jackson said.
“Ty was there, and we smoked. He was young, but you could tell he’d already been through a lot.”
Things changed for Ty Munna in June 2023. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Authorities accused him of killing Alijah, the 20-year-old brother of EBK Juvie. At first, Ty Munna was held in juvenile detention. But on his 18th birthday, he was moved to adult Cook County Jail. After hearing about the arrest, Jackson stepped in to help. He sent money to Ty Munna to assist with his legal needs.
“Ty is like family to me,”
Jackson said.
“I had to make sure he had some support.”
Jackson’s connection to OBlock and his actions toward Ty Munna have sparked mixed feelings. Some question why a former NBA star would get involved in such a situation. Others praise him for staying loyal to a community he cares about. Regardless of the opinions, Jackson remains firm in his decision to stand by Ty Munna.
