Pope Francis was taken to Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital to be treated for bronchitis, confirmed the Vatican earlier today. The pope, aged 88, was experiencing breathing troubles over a span of a few days before hospitalization for close medical supervision and diagnostic tests.
Pope Francis’ health has been a regular point of concern in recent years, thanks to his age and a history of respiratory issues. The Pope, who had a lobe of his lung removed in his teenage years after a serious infection, has previously suffered from pneumonia and other respiratory issues. The hospitalization is a culmination of a week of visibly worsening fatigue, during which he was compelled to hand over parts of his addresses and limit his public appearances.
The Vatican’s official announcement told the public that Pope Francis is receiving appropriate treatment and is responding favorably to medical treatment. “The Holy Father was diagnosed with bronchitis and is receiving necessary medical treatment. He is in a stable condition, and his doctors are optimistic in his recovery,” said Vatican official Matteo Bruni
Pope Francis has experienced a succession of health complications throughout his papacy. In 2021, he underwent a procedure to treat his diverticulitis in his colon, and in 2023 he underwent a procedure to repair a hernia. Chronic knee problems also led to his use of mobility aids such as a walker and a wheelchair. Despite these health complications, he has continued to lead a hectic schedule, such as trips overseas and large Vatican events.
Bronchitis, an infection of bronchi in airways, is of great concern in older patients, especially those having underlying respiratory disease. The chronic cough, mucous build-up, tightness in chest, and shortness of breath constitute bronchitis symptoms. Severe or unattended bronchitis can result in pneumonia, a condition that is possibly fatal. The Vatican has not issued reports of whether or not Pope Francis is on antibiotic treatment or is getting oxygen support but has confirmed that he is in capable hands.
In light of his hospitalization, all of Pope Francis’ events that he had planned have been cancelled until a later time. Among those events is his speech that he was to deliver during a spiritual retreat of Lent and a proposed tour of Rome’s Cinecittà Studios.

While the Vatican has not given a concrete timeline for his release, his condition would be strictly monitored in the next few days by his physicians.
