Kerley’s girlfriend, who also was there when he resisted arrest, pleaded with police: “Stop. he’s gonna hurt himself.”.
Kerley had been booked on counts of battery on a police officer, resisting an officer without violence, and disorderly conduct. Following his arrest, he was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and then transferred to Miami-Dade County jail. He was later released on bail after attending a court hearing.
The Miami Beach Police Department has also weighed in on the situation, with a statement supporting their actions prior to the application of force, labeling the stun gun as ‘necessary for safety’ since Kerley continued resisting. “Despite officers’ efforts to deescalate the situation, the defendant assumed a fighting stance and ignored lawful commands,” the statement read.
Fred Kerley is one of the most successful sprinters of his generation. The 29-year-old captured a silver medal in the 100 meters in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a bronze in the same event in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Additionally, Kerley has numerous medals at the World Athletics Championships and recently experienced additional fame as one of the featured athletes in the Netflix athletics docuseries Sprint.
