Jackie Chan’s Surprising Shopping Addiction After Becoming a Multimillionaire

Jackie Chan has always been someone the world admires—whether for his jaw-dropping stunts or his inspiring rise to fame. But behind the movie star image is a side of Jackie many don’t know. He’s spoken openly about a personal struggle that surprised even his closest fans: a shopping addiction tied to his impoverished childhood.

Jackie’s early years in Hong Kong were filled with challenges. His family lived in a cramped home, and he grew up wearing hand-me-down clothes. Those tough times left a deep mark on him. When he finally found financial success, it was as if he needed to make up for everything he couldn’t have as a kid. He didn’t just buy a pair of shoes—he bought entire warehouses. This pattern wasn’t limited to footwear. Jackie’s spending spree included luxury cars too. At one point, he had so many vehicles—Ferraris, Bentleys, even a custom Mitsubishi EVO bearing his name—that he couldn’t drive them all.

His generosity with others was just as extravagant. In his autobiography, Never Grow Up, Jackie wrote about buying expensive watches for his team and hosting enormous dinners for large groups. Some of these outings cost millions, but Jackie didn’t mind. He wanted to share his success with the people around him, though, deep down, it was also his way of compensating for the years when he had so little.

Over time, Jackie began to see that material things weren’t the key to happiness. He started focusing less on what he could buy and more on how he could give back. Today, with an estimated net worth of $400 million, Jackie is known as much for his philanthropy as for his movies. He founded the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation and has clarified that his fortune will go to charity, not his son, Jaycee. Jackie has explained his decision in simple terms:

“If he’s capable, he’ll make his own money. If he’s not, he’d just waste mine.”

This year, Jackie turned 70, and the milestone gave him plenty of reasons to reflect on his journey. In his latest film, Ride On, he plays an aging stuntman—a role that feels like a personal nod to his decades of dedication to performing his own stunts. Even at this stage in his life, Jackie remains just as passionate about his craft as he was when he first started out.

Jackie Chan’s story is about so much more than movies and martial arts. It’s about a boy who grew up with nothing, gained everything, and then learned what really matters. His life reminds us that while money can change your circumstances, it’s the choices you make with it that define who you are.
