2022 Emmy Nominations Continue Dismissing Black Representation

    The Annual Emmy Awards

The Primetime Emmy Awards show is moment of recognition and admiration in Hollywood. A time to acknowledge actors, actresses, directors, screenwriters and celebrities alike, this ceremony has always been controversy. The Emmy Awards 2022 nominations show another year of overlooking black talent.

    EMMY 2022 Nominations

With the list of nominations circulating online, many Black celebrities have taken action by speaking on the ceremony. Anthony Anderson recently spoke on Jimmy Kimmel Live stating he feels the Emmys are racist. Anthony who is apart of the ABC show Blackish, has received 26 nominations but only one win during the eight seasons.

    EMMY 2022 Nominations

The 2022 Emmy Awards list of nominations includes 13 Black nominees with 17 different categories to vote on. Although 13 is great, we still see majority of white nominations for all categories. However, first time nominee Quinta Brunson won seven nominations for her show Abbott Elementary. As well as Issa Rae, Sanaa Lathan, Lizzo and Zendaya also receiving nominations.

    Why Representation Matters

The importance of equal representation reaches far beyond the adult audience. The younger generations of Black & brown people need to see others like them on television. In addition to seeing these examples, a rightful victory that is deserving also must be given. Year after year the Emmys along with other Hollywood ceremonies continue to overlook this issue.

In 2022 alone, 15 new black TV shows premiered on several major networks including ABC, NBC, Showtime and The OWN Network. Of these 15, less than half were nominated for any awards including the Emmys. New Black actors & actresses emerged with major roles in blockbuster films and critically acclaimed shows. Nonetheless, very few if none at all receive any praise or acknowledgment. As more aspiring Black & brown talent attempts to break into the scene, they will continue to face this problem.

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards winners will be televised on ABC on September 12th.
