NASA May Have Found Signs of Ancient Life on Mars, but the Sample Return Got Cut

Social media is buzzing with claims that NASA found “ancient alien life” on Mars. The viral posts make it sound like little green microbes are confirmed. But is that what actually happened, or is online hype turning a solid scientific find into something far bigger?

In July 2024, NASA’s Perseverance rover examined a reddish, arrowhead-shaped rock nicknamed Cheyava Falls in Jezero Crater’s ancient river channel, Neretva Vallis. The rover drilled a core sample on July 21, 2024, and sealed it as Sapphire Canyon. Scientists spotted distinctive “leopard spots” pale millimeter-scale patches with dark rims plus tinier “poppy seeds.” Instruments detected organic carbon, along with minerals consistent with vivianite (a hydrated iron phosphate) and greigite (an iron sulfide).

On Earth, similar combinations often appear where microbes use chemical reactions involving organic matter, iron, sulfur, and phosphorus for energy. A peer-reviewed Nature paper in September 2025 and NASA’s announcement described Sapphire Canyon as a potential biosignature the strongest candidate Perseverance has collected so far. NASA places it at Step 1 on its Confidence of Life Detection scale: a “possible signal.”

Explained Joel Hurowitz, an astrobiologist at Stony Brook University and lead author on the study published by NASA’s Perseverance rover team.

“However, just because we had found all those interesting chemical signs in the data, it doesn’t mean we had something that would indicate a life sign.”

Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy called it

“the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars.”

Project scientist Katie Stack Morgan stressed the caution required:

“Astrobiological claims… require extraordinary evidence… while abiotic explanations… are less likely… we cannot rule them out.”

No organism, fossil, or confirmed life has been found. The features could still form through non-biological chemistry. Rover instruments cannot run the full suite of isotope, microscopic, and molecular tests possible in Earth labs. That’s why scientists want the samples home.

Perseverance has cached dozens of carefully selected cores. The original NASA-ESA Mars Sample Return campaign was meant to retrieve them with a lander, ascent vehicle, and Earth-return orbiter. Costs ballooned toward $11 billion with returns possibly delayed to 2040. Redesigns aimed lower still looked unaffordable.

In the FY2026 budget process, Congress effectively ended support for the existing architecture. Appropriations language stated the agreement “does not support the existing Mars Sample Return program.” Limited funds shifted to a “Mars Future Missions” line for technology work, but no approved retrieval plan or timeline exists for these samples.

NASA has not confirmed ancient life or “aliens.” It has reported a scientifically important potential biosignature that needs Earth-based analysis. The existing sample-return architecture was halted mainly over cost, schedule, and complexity not because lawmakers abandoned proven extraterrestrial life. The broader goal of returning Martian samples is not permanently dead, but Sapphire Canyon and the other tubes remain on Mars for now.

The rock that could help settle one of science’s biggest questions is still sitting on the Red Planet, waiting.
