Dashcam video caught this nightmare moment on the A50 in Derbyshire, England a Ford Focus flying down the road at 71 mph, no brakes, no dodging, just slamming right into a parked Nissan X-Trail. Metal twisted, stuff flew everywhere, total mess.
This happened back on April 6, 2025, and it wrecked a bunch of lives. The guy behind the wheel, Jack Bentley, 30-year-old prison guard from Derby, had been on his phone the whole two-hour drive from Blackpool, about 120 miles. He was deep into online gambling apps. Phone records proved it he even drifted into the grass and weaved across lanes before the big smash.
The Nissan had a family inside, going back to Yorkshire. The passenger was a woman 33 weeks pregnant; she broke her pelvis in the accident. They rushed her to the hospital for an emergency C-section, knocked out from general anesthesia. Her little girl came early, weighing about 4 pounds, with her lungs collapsed. She was in the NICU for weeks but is okay.

The two kids in the back got banged up too one had a broken ankle. The driver dealt with whiplash, and even their dog needed spinal surgery right away. In court, the mom talked about how gut-wrenching it was: split from her partner and the newborn immediately, visiting the baby in an incubator while she was still hurting bad.
Bentley got arrested on the spot. He owned up to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving that’s the UK charge for being reckless and hurting people bad. On February 11, 2026, at Derby Crown Court, they sentenced him to 28 months in jail and banned him from driving for 38 months. He’ll have to pass an extended driving test to get back on the road.
Derbyshire cop PC Richard Morris called it “an awful bit of driving,” pinning the blame on Bentley’s obsession with his phone totally avoidable disaster.
Over in the UK, the Road Traffic Act says no holding your phone while driving. You can get fined up to £1,000, six points on your license, or even disqualified. In bad cases like this, yeah, prison time.
In the US, it’s all over the map no nationwide ban. Lots of states outlaw texting for everyone, and some limit hand-held calls just for new drivers. But distractions still kill: In 2023, 3,275 folks died from it, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That’s roughly 8% of all road deaths, and phones are a huge part of that. Studies say American drivers get distracted almost three times more than Brits, maybe because enforcement varies so much.
