LA Rapper Luci4, Star of ‘BodyPartz,’ Dies at 23

The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Luci4, the fast-rising Los Angeles rapper born James Dear, who died Sunday (Feb. 22) at the age of 23.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Luci4 was pronounced dead at a private residence in Los Angeles. An official cause of death has not yet been released and remains pending. The Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not ruled out foul play, but no arrests or additional details have been made public as of Tuesday (Feb. 24).

Luci4 — who also recorded under the name Axxturel — emerged from the underground rap scene to become one of the most recognizable voices in the sigilkore microgenre, a dark, internet-driven offshoot of trap known for distorted production and occult-inspired imagery. His breakout track “BodyPartz” became a viral hit, surpassing 50 million streams on Spotify in 2025 and marking a major commercial milestone for the 23-year-old artist.

The song’s success helped expand Luci4’s cult following beyond SoundCloud and TikTok, where his abrasive, atmospheric sound first gained traction. Other fan favorites, including “Dead n Gone,” “Kurxxed Emeraldz” and “Ave Domina Lilith,” continued to build his streaming presence, while his 2025 project VAMPMANIA 3 underscored his growing influence within the experimental rap space.

His manager, Kayla G, confirmed the news in a Feb. 22 TikTok, writing, “I am devastated to inform you that today, James, Luci4, Axxturel has passed away. He was truly a leader a king and a musician and a genius.”

“There’s nobody like him and there will never be. We all loved him dearly. Rest Easy,” she continued. “Please allow family and friends privacy and patience during this difficult time.”

In comments to media outlets including TMZ, Luci4’s grandparents said he had been staying at a friend’s home prior to his death. They expressed concerns about the circumstances, alleging that his wallet was found emptied and noting they had previously warned him about people in his circle as his fame increased. Law enforcement officials have not publicly confirmed those details.

Luci4’s death comes amid renewed conversations about the dangers facing young hip-hop artists navigating rapid success. In recent years, the genre has suffered multiple high-profile losses, including Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke, who was killed during a 2020 home invasion in Los Angeles at age 20, and Florida artist XXXTentacion, who was fatally shot during a 2018 robbery.

Researchers have long pointed to elevated risks facing young Black men in the United States, including disproportionately high homicide rates among those aged 18 to 24, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Industry observers have noted that factors such as sudden wealth, public visibility and proximity to violence can compound those broader systemic risks for emerging artists.
