A viral doorbell video showing a 78-year-old delivery driver struggling to complete a food order has turned into a major online fundraiser — raising hundreds of thousands of dollars and capturing widespread attention across social media.
The story began in early March when Brittany Smith shared footage recorded by her Ring Doorbell Camera at her home in Manchester, Tennessee. The clip shows an elderly DoorDash driver, later identified as Richard Pulley, slowly making his way up Smith’s curved driveway while delivering a Starbucks order.
In the video, Pulley appears visibly winded as he approaches the front door, pausing briefly while carrying the delivery. The moment struck a chord with Smith, who said she was concerned about how hard the task appeared to be for the driver.
Smith later posted the footage online in hopes of finding the man so she could thank him and offer a larger tip. With help from social media users and members of the local community, she eventually located Pulley and visited him at his home.
During their conversation, Pulley explained that he had previously retired but returned to work because of financial strain. His wife, Brenda Pulley, had lost her job and the health insurance that came with it, leaving the couple struggling to keep up with expenses and prescription costs.
To make ends meet, Pulley began delivering orders through DoorDash more than a year ago. At times, he said, his wife even joined him during deliveries as the couple worked together to cover their monthly bills.
Moved by his situation, Smith initially gave Pulley $200 in cash. Soon afterward, she created a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe titled “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again,” setting a modest goal of $20,000 to help the couple ease their financial burden.
The campaign quickly took off online.
As the story spread across platforms including TikTok, Facebook and X, thousands of users shared the video and began contributing to the fundraiser. Within days, donations surged well past the original goal, eventually surpassing $400,000 from thousands of contributors.
Local outlets including WSMV-TV and FOX 17 Nashville reported on the story and interviewed the couple, confirming the authenticity of the fundraiser and Pulley’s circumstances.
In those interviews, Richard and Brenda Pulley said the donations had dramatically changed their situation. The couple described the support as life-changing, saying it would help them pay for medications, daily expenses and allow Pulley to step away from the physically demanding delivery work.
While the moment began with a routine food delivery, the video has since become a widely shared example of how quickly social media can mobilize collective support — turning a brief clip from a doorbell camera into a campaign that may allow Pulley to retire again after returning to work out of necessity.
