The 20-year-old American streamer and YouTube star, who boasts more than 28 million subscribers, went viral this week after a clip surfaced showing him visibly overwhelmed while trying traditional Algerian couscous in the Sahara Desert. The moment, captured during a livestream stop near Djanet in southern Algeria, quickly spread across X, YouTube and Instagram, racking up tens of thousands of views within hours.
In the 36-second highlight, iShowSpeed — born Darren Watkins Jr. — is seen seated on low cushions in a traditional tent-like setting, surrounded by local hosts dressed in Tuareg-style robes. After taking a few bites of couscous with vegetables and meat, the typically high-energy creator erupts into praise, repeatedly calling the dish “elite” and marveling at the meat’s tenderness. At one point, he appears close to tears, hugging those around him and ranking the meal among the best he’s ever had on stream.
The reaction marked a rare pause in iShowSpeed’s usually chaotic on-camera persona. While exaggerated responses are part of his brand, fans noted that this moment felt especially sincere, with the streamer expressing genuine surprise at how much he enjoyed the food.
The dish at the center of the viral moment, couscous, is a staple of Algerian cuisine and a symbol of hospitality across North Africa. Made from steamed semolina and typically topped with a slow-cooked stew of meat, vegetables, and chickpeas, couscous was recognized by UNESCO in 2020 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage element shared by Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Mauritania.
iShowSpeed’s Algeria stop is part of his widely followed January 2026 IRL Africa tour, which began in Egypt and has featured cultural exchanges, local dances, and food tastings throughout the continent. His visit to southern Algeria included time with local communities, who welcomed him with traditional attire and communal meals.
