Tom Holland just gave Spider-Man fans the kind of tease that keeps the internet spinning. In a recent Serieously interview, the actor addressed the possibility of a fifth solo film after the massive opening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
“It’s on the cards… It’s a little unclear right now,”
Holland said, adding that whatever comes next for the character
“will be very bright.”
It is perfect timing. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and released on July 31, 2026, Brand New Day has made about $927 million around the globe in just one weekend alone, with domestic takings being estimated at $355 million. Such a performance usually prompts studios to act faster, and Brand New Day’s success has been widely discussed as a possibility for the start of a new trilogy.
Tom Holland first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War. Later, Holland appeared in the solo films Homecoming (2017), Far From Home (2019), and No Way Home (2021). After No Way Home’s ending with memory wipe, the fate of Spider-Man became uncertain. Instead, Brand New Day gives the superhero a fresh start in a more secluded adult world, but still part of Marvel Studios’ shared universe.
Sony Pictures still holds the film rights, with longtime producer Amy Pascal guiding the franchise. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige oversees the MCU integration. The partnership has proven extremely valuable: Holland’s solo films alone have generated billions, making Spider-Man one of the most reliable properties for both companies.
Holland has been consistent about the long game. He has said Marvel and the creative team have discussed a succession plan since finishing No Way Home, including the eventual possibility of passing the mantle perhaps to a live-action Miles Morales while leaving the door open for him to continue in a mentoring role. He has also repeatedly stated he will keep playing Peter
“for as long as they have me,”
tying future appearances to how the movies perform.
Industry reports have described Brand New Day as the potential start of a second trilogy, with early conversations about Spider-Man 5 and even 6 already underway. Those remain unconfirmed reports. Neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures has announced a fifth film, attached a director beyond Cretton’s work on the current movie, or set a release date.
Given Holland’s optimism as well as the success of the movie at the box office, another installment appears more and more inevitable. That said, the right thing to do would be to wait for an official announcement from Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures about Spider-Man 5 until we can take it for granted. The thing is that some mystery around these characters keeps the plot going.
