Kristin Cabot, the former chief people officer at tech company Astronomer, has spoken publicly for the first time about the viral Coldplay “kiss cam” moment that upended her career and dominated social media over the summer.
In an interview published Dec. 18 by The New York Times, Cabot addressed the July 16 incident at Coldplay’s concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., where she was shown on the venue’s jumbotron in an intimate embrace with then–Astronomer CEO Andy Byron. The brief clip, filmed by a concertgoer and shared to TikTok, quickly spread across platforms, amassing more than 100 million views and earning the online nickname “#coldplaygate.”
The moment unfolded during the band’s set when the kiss cam landed on a VIP balcony, capturing Byron with his arms wrapped around Cabot from behind as they danced. When the pair realized they were on camera, Cabot turned away while Byron ducked out of sight. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin commented from the stage, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy,” before adding, “I hope we didn’t do something bad.”
Internet users soon identified the pair as executives at Astronomer, fueling widespread speculation, memes, and criticism, particularly because both were married at the time. Cabot has since said she and her husband were separated before the concert.
In the interview, Cabot denied having an affair with Byron and said the kiss was the first and only time they had been physically intimate. She attributed the moment to poor judgment after drinking, calling it “cliché and so bad,” especially given their professional roles as head of HR and CEO.
“I made a bad decision,” Cabot said, adding that alcohol and what she described as a “crush” on Byron contributed to the lapse.
The fallout was immediate. Astronomer placed Byron on leave and launched an internal investigation; he resigned days later. Cabot also stepped down from her role. Byron has not commented publicly and declined interview requests.
Cabot said the backlash extended far beyond her resignation. She described receiving thousands of abusive messages and death threats, some of which were overheard by her children. She filed for divorce in August, a move she said had been planned before the concert and was amicable.
“I took accountability and I gave up my career for that,” Cabot said. “That’s the price I chose to pay.”
Clips from the interview circulated widely on social media on Wednesday, drawing tens of thousands of reactions. Many users questioned Cabot’s explanation and criticized her conduct, while others argued the response illustrated the extremes of online shaming.
The viral moment also had unexpected ripple effects in the music world. Coldplay saw a brief boost in streaming following the incident, and Martin later began offering lighthearted disclaimers before kiss cam segments at subsequent shows.
More than five months later, Cabot said she is focused on her family and moving forward. However, the clip that sparked the controversy continues to circulate online — a reminder of how a few seconds on a stadium screen can reverberate far beyond the music.
