They have also experienced a wide range of sensations and emotions. Some report feeling a strong sense of peace and quietness. Others describe a bright light. They may even hear a distinct sound.

Some NDEs are so profound that no words can describe them. The recurring experiences often involve seeing and hearing people around them that they know are dead. Some are able to communicate with them and ask questions.

It usually starts with a “life review.” You go through your entire life, reliving the events in front of you and experiencing how they made you feel.

They then have an encounter with what they believe is a being of light, sometimes referred to as God or Jesus. The being may have different forms and appearances, depending on the person’s religious beliefs.

Individuals are usually told that it’s time to return to their body. Other times they will be asked to stay with the being of light for a period of time. When they return, some will experience a new level of life that is light and positive. Other times they will be taken to a hellish place where they have to deal with evil and pain, Swedrock said.

Some people also feel that they need to help other people in the afterlife. They want to teach them the things they learned during their NDE.

Dr. Bruce Greyson, a psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences professor (University of Virginia), weighed in on the subject. He claims that testimonies such as these are not uncommon. He has studied first-hand accounts of people who had NDEs for about 50 years.

Most people are hesitant to publicly share their NDEs because they feel that others will be skeptical. Dan’s story is a very good example of how to interpret an NDE from a Christian perspective. Moody outlines 15 elements of an NDE in his book Life After Life, and Dan describes most, if not all, of them. He also does not mention a certain noise that Moody relates to many NDEs.

Moreover, it is not clear that Dan’s account accurately reflects Moody’s account or other people’s stories he has read. It does not match up with his chronology and the 15 elements he outlined.

It is a very real and meaningful phenomenon that touches too many lives. It is a phenomenon that Christians must better understand and embrace if they are to effectively share the gospel with those who have had an NDE. This can impact the way we think about life, death and God.
