Authorities in Santa Rosa County are investigating one of the most shocking juvenile crimes in recent memory following the death of 14-year-old Danika Jade Troy. The Florida teen was allegedly lured into the woods by classmates and killed in a violent attack that has rocked her community and reignited nationwide conversations about youth violence and access to firearms.
Danika, a student from Pace, Florida, was reportedly taken to a wooded area near 3970 Kimberly Road on the night of November 30 by 16-year-old Gabriel Coleman Williams and 14-year-old Kimahri Blevins. According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, Williams allegedly shot Danika multiple times with a stolen handgun before the teens set her body on fire. Her remains were discovered two days later.
Investigators say Williams stole his mother’s 9mm handgun earlier that day. Blevins told detectives the original plan was to fire a single shot, but Williams continued shooting. The teens then allegedly doused Danika’s body in gasoline in an attempt to destroy evidence. Her black-and-red electric scooter was found at the scene.
Danika’s mother, Ashley Troy, reported her missing the following morning, initially believing she had run away. On December 2, a passerby discovered Danika’s remains about 50 yards into the woods. Forensic identification relied on clothing descriptions and the scooter’s connection to her disappearance report.
Authorities say Williams confessed that Danika had insulted him, calling him a “worthless gang banger,” and claimed this prompted the attack. Sheriff Bob Johnson, however, said the alleged motive “doesn’t fit the forensics or any facts of the case,” suggesting investigators are exploring deeper factors. Officials have not confirmed any gang affiliations or social media conflicts.
A cooperating witness reportedly helped police pinpoint the suspects. Both teens were arrested on December 4 and are now in a Department of Juvenile Justice facility. Williams confessed during questioning, while Blevins initially stated requesting an attorney. Sheriff Johnson called the investigation a “ground ball,” citing confessions, witness statements, the stolen handgun, and recovered 9mm casings as evidence that leaves little doubt about what occurred.
Both Williams and Blevins have been charged with first-degree premeditated murder. Authorities have indicated they plan to pursue adult charges due to the severity of the crime. “You do an adult crime. You need to do adult time,” Johnson said, describing the killing as “horrific.” The State Attorney’s Office has yet to announce when it will decide on transferring the case to adult court.
Danika was remembered as a typical teen whose presence was deeply felt by her school community. Santa Rosa County District Schools expressed sorrow and confirmed counseling services are being offered while coordinating with law enforcement.
The case has sparked outrage both locally and online, highlighting broader concerns over youth violence. CDC data shows youth homicides increased 15% from 2019 to 2022, often fueled by interpersonal disputes, social media, and easy access to firearms.
As investigators continue to gather forensic evidence and prepare for prosecution, Santa Rosa County mourns Danika’s death while grappling with the unsettling reality of the ages of those accused.
