President Donald Trump gave Nicki Minaj an unexpected shoutout during the White House’s Black History Month reception on Tuesday night (Feb. 18), praising the rapper’s appearance in a moment that quickly began circulating online.
Speaking from the podium in the East Room, Trump paused his remarks to acknowledge Minaj, who has recently aligned herself publicly with the president.
“How about Nicki Minaj? Do we love Nicki Minaj?” he asked the audience. “I love Nicki Minaj. She was here a couple weeks ago. She’s so beautiful. Her skin is so beautiful.”
Trump then referenced her signature long acrylic nails, stretching his hands outward to demonstrate their length. “Her nails are like that long,” he said with a laugh. “I said, ‘Nicki, are they real?’ She didn’t want to get into that.”
He closed the aside by adding, “But she was so beautiful and so great — and she gets it, more importantly.”
The moment comes amid Minaj’s increasingly visible support for Trump in 2026. The rapper has attended multiple Trump-affiliated events in recent months and has made several visits to the White House. In January, she appeared at the Trump Accounts Summit, and she has publicly referred to herself as a supporter of the president.
Minaj reposted a fan account sharing the viral clip Tuesday evening but did not add additional commentary. Her fanbase, the Barbz, largely embraced the moment online, treating it as humorous and celebratory.
While hip-hop has historically leaned Democratic, Trump has continued efforts to engage artists and athletes across the cultural spectrum. During Tuesday’s reception, he also praised former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, highlighting what he described as Tyson’s loyalty over the years.
The Black History Month event featured tributes to influential Black Americans in sports, music and politics, including Frederick Douglass, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Chuck Berry. Trump also announced that former HUD Secretary Ben Carson would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Still, it was the Minaj moment that resonated most across social media, underscoring the ongoing intersection of hip-hop and politics — and how even a brief aside at a formal White House event can quickly become a viral pop culture talking point.
