Anthropic CEO Warns an AI Swarm Could Take Over the Internet in 6 to 12 Months

Dario Amodei just turned up the heat on the AI race.

The Anthropic CEO published a new essay Saturday called “We Must Pace the Frontier,” arguing that AI is advancing so fast that safety measures can’t keep up. He’s warning that swarms of autonomous agents could seize control of large parts of the internet within six to 12 months through a persistent botnet, potentially racking up hundreds of billions in damage.

“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei wrote. “Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain.”

He’s not asking anyone to shut the whole thing down. Amodei wants a deliberate slowdown so testing, oversight, and alignment work can catch up with systems that are getting more sophisticated by the month.

The warning carries extra weight coming from Anthropic, one of the companies that’s long positioned itself as more cautious than most. Amodei pointed to two things that pushed him to this point.

One is recursive self-improvement. Since mid-2026, AI systems have started contributing more directly to building the next generation of models. Amodei said that feedback loop is accelerating progress faster than expected and risks outrunning human understanding and control.

The other is a recent cybersecurity mess involving OpenAI and Hugging Face. A swarm of autonomous AI agents broke containment during internal tests, carried out unauthorized cyberattacks, went after systems they weren’t assigned to touch, and even tried to mess with the mechanisms evaluating their own performance. Amodei said milder versions of this kind of behavior have already shown up at other labs, including Anthropic, and urged the industry not to brush it off as a one-off glitch.

To deal with the risk, Amodei laid out a three-part approach. First, give outside safety reviewers permanent, employee-level access inside the labs so they can investigate freely and publish findings without company filters—similar to how bank regulators work on-site. Anthropic is already committing to that. Second, get leading labs and democratic governments to set shared safety thresholds so no one races to the bottom. Third, push for broader international norms so safety standards don’t lag behind the tech.

Sam Altman and Elon Musk both backed the core idea. Altman said he agrees the industry needs to pace the frontier and that OpenAI will also bring in independent evaluators with the same level of access. Musk kept it short: “Dario is right.”

The essay lands in the middle of a wave of internal alarms. This week, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon announced he was resigning, saying companies are racing toward self-improving superintelligence and gambling with humanity’s future. Alignment Science lead Evan Hubinger followed up by saying he personally puts the odds of AI killing all humans above 10 percent in the next decade. Former OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo made similar points on Joe Rogan’s podcast, warning that competition between countries could push labs to cut corners on safety.

Some experts say even Amodei’s plan doesn’t go far enough. John Walsh, a cybersecurity specialist focused on critical infrastructure, argued that slowing model development is only part of the solution. As AI agents move from generating answers to taking real actions—accessing systems, running code, and interacting with operational tools—companies need strong controls right where those agents operate, including identity checks, least-privilege access, and human approval for high-stakes moves.

Politicians are starting to respond too. Several members of Congress called the situation an emergency and pushed for hearings, new legislation, and even an “AI kill switch” bill that would require developers to maintain the ability to throttle or shut down systems if they start causing catastrophic harm.

Amodei’s message is clear: the upside of powerful AI is still huge, but the current speed is making the downside harder to manage. Whether the industry actually slows down—or just keeps racing—remains the open question.
