For fans of Andrew Garfield and everything Spider-Man, the recent whispers about his return for “Spider-Man 4” have not been anything less than electric. But now the actor has finally spoken-and it mightn’t be precisely what fans wish to hear. In an open interview with GQ UK, he spoke about rumors that have churned up, delivering his inimitable combination of charm and wit. “I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on,” he said, referring to how he loves to deny rumors only to later surprise fans – as seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
This isn’t the first time that Andrew Garfield has had to quash some speculation about Spider-Man. Fans still remember 2021, when he spent months emphatically denying his involvement in “No Way Home.” Then, to the delight of moviegoers worldwide, Garfield swung back onto the big screen, joining Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in a multiverse extravaganza that brought his version of Peter Parker full circle.
Garfield once likened the secrecy of that project to planning a surprise party: “It felt like organizing a surprise party, except everyone’s asking you if there’s a party, and you have to lie to their faces.” Now, Garfield’s categorical “no” on “Spider-Man 4” comes with a grain of salt. As much as he claims he is not involved, many fans remain unconvinced-and rightly so. We have been taken in by Garfield’s poker face once before.
While Garfield categorically denies any involvement in “Spider-Man 4” at this time, he has not yet closed the door on again donning the red-and-blue suit. In his GQ UK interview, the actor mentioned being open to revisiting Spider-Man-but only under one circumstance. “If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun,” he said. Ever the comedian, Garfield joked that money could be a factor, saying, “Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.” Beyond Spider-Man, Garfield touched on the rumors of reuniting with the legendary director Martin Scorsese. As much as he’d love to work with Scorsese again, Garfield humorously noted, “You can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call, because he makes a movie every three years and a lot of the time Leo DiCaprio is in it.”
The social media is full of theories about how his Spider-Man would fit into future projects from Marvel, mostly because the multiverse was going to open up;it doesn’t stop there. News of “Spider-Man 4,” due out on July 26, 2026, has fans even more hyped. Tom Holland confirmed he’s returning to the movie, calling the pitch for the movie “excellent” and saying he and Zendaya were “so excited” after reading the script together.
Filming is expected to start in summer 2025.
For Garfield, the mania around Spider-Man is nothing new. His Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012) and its 2014 sequel brought him a following of very passionate fans, though the abrupt end to the franchise left them, not to mention the actor himself, “left dangling.” Returning for “No Way Home” was an opportunity to celebrate the character alongside his fellow Spider-Men. “I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever,” Garfield said of the experience. “All the pressure was on Tom.” It is from this place that Garfield’s reflections, in the GQ interview, come across with much humility and realism about his career. He is not running after every big franchise; instead, he’s thinking about the projects that mean something to him. In part, this has to do with the bruises he experienced working on “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchise, where commercial concerns sometimes eclipsed the creative fulfillment of the projects at hand.
Now, Garfield weighs his love for acting against personal growth and authenticity. “I would 100% come back as Spider-Man if it was the right thing,” Garfield said earlier this summer to Esquire. “If it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.”
